Just wondering if there are any exercises I can do to improve my position in canter. I've had a break from riding after having two children but now have a lovely horse on loan. I'm fine cantering out on a hack holding myself slightly out of the saddle but when schooling canter feels like such hard work and I want to improve this area of my riding. I plan to have some lessons soon but in the meantime wondered it there are any exercises I can do on and off the horse to improve. I suppose work without stirrups might help... eek

I personally think that riding without stirrups actually makes your position worse and teaches you to grip... Position in canter - my first thing is get your sitting trot good. And then do that in canter. Get your weight off the horses shoulders and imagine you are sat on a surf board and you are trying to push the back end of it down with your bum. Let your legs (knees) relax so that your legs hang rather than grip and keep your weight in the centre of the saddle.
