As part of my degree I'm looking into what are the most common injuries to riders (either when competing or at home) so if anyone can tell me injuries they have had I would be really grateful just to get an idea of what the most common injury is. I was looking at the BE website earlier and I'm sure they have a document on there that directs you to recorded injuries on courses (but not sure how specific they are, so if anyone can give me help in that direction I would be most grateful! :)

So I guess I'll start off i have broke my leg, horse jumped a hedge I fell off on the other side and he stood on and broke my femur, brings tears to my eyes even thinking of that now :O

Sister broke her collarbone in a near-rotational when her pony hit a fence due to slippy conditions XC.

Other than that, for me it's usually landing on my head giving me a killer headache and sore neck...

i'll lay money that collar bones will be the most common fracture...
me: fractured humerus (another rider hit me shoulder-to-shoulder and broke my arm), ruptured spleen, punctured lung.
wrecked right knee (fractured base of femur, ACL rupture), 8-9yr gap then
wrecked right knee again (dislocation, ruptured ACL, tore medial ligament).
concussed a couple of times, yonks ago.
worst injuries from getting bucked off!

Not me, grandaughter. Broken wrist (had to be plated), broken collarbone, broken neck and numerous stiff everythings over a period of about 12 years. None of them was when she was eventing though. Which discipline(s) are you interested in?

hands down collar bone is definitely most common. especially in jockeys.. think they can get replacements made of rubber or something (don't quote me on that.. it was during a post racing discussion in the pub so memory is a bit fuzz :D)

I myself have broken my nose and collar bone and fractured cheek bone! (all on seperate occasions!) :) along with manys a sprain!

Been hospitalised numerous times courtesey of horses. While I too have broken collar bone, ribs front and back, both wrists, elbow and b**gered the ligaments in my knee plus have had 2 back "episodes" partly contributed to by having too strong a back with much weaker stomach muscles. Also a lovely haemotoma that had me in hospital for 5 days and 2 operations thanks to my mare - literally - kicking me out of the lorry. That was the last straw. However the most common injuries (and this explains a lot) is head injuries. I have been severly concussed 7 + times now which has ended up in a hospital stay so am expert on it now. Not funny when you can't even remember your OH's name ( and he wasn't best pleased either!)

Moi...

Broken wrist
Broken ribs
Broken vertebrae
Broken ankle
Ripped ligaments in back
Ripped ligaments in ankle
Knocked out a few times
Serious head injury

...ooooooops

As i don't compete all my injuries have either been out hacking or having a lesson. Worst was probably a fractured pelvic bone when my horse reared up and went over backwards, concussion and memory loss when bolted with and falling off and neck and head injuries when having flat work lesson and horse suddenly bucked me off, went straight over his head and landed on the back of my head. Not too bad really for riding 20 years, usually bail out if getting hairy and don't seem to get as injured, also horses have been taught to stop if I come off!!

From riding, as opposed to handling:

- concussion
- whiplash
- sprained ankles
- sprained sacro-iliac joint leading to rotation of pelvis, damage to coccyx and significant subsequent muscular damage along the length of the spine. Did this 4 years ago and am still receiving treatment! Sodding nightmare!
- worst of all was landing on my head and thinking of nothing but Lily Savage for the next few hours

And of course general bruising from going splat too often.

broken elbow (radial head) had to be plated caused by stupidly putting hand out when horse slipped, hit fence and deposited me. Then had to have plate removed and now cant fully extend arm and have limited rotation

Snap Spin I have also broken my nose and collar bone along side an ac joint dislocation. Also broke thumb and big toe. However considering that is over 20 plus years riding and competing eventing for a lot of them I consider my self pretty lucky! Only the big toe was whilst competing and the nose was whilst leading a horse to the field!

Currently sporting broken ribs from a fall last weekend. Lots of muscular damage and strains/sprains but thats it (also had a nail ripped out!)

Fell through a hay loft, and perforated bowel, severely fractured left wrist which nearly resulted in it being amputated, broken shoulder, broken ribs and severe internal bleeding! Phew! Luckily, touch wood, I haven't had many bad 'horse' falls other than a few concussion incidents! Hope that helps!

All of mine have been whilst jumping

Knocked out and concussed (many many years ago!)
2 ribs in my back and cracked pelvis
Broken, dislocated and torn ligament on my finger (bit of a mess) and broken nose.

Fractured coccyx with slipped disc
badly bruised ribs
broken toe
streatched/ sprained part off your foot that spreads out then contracts when you walk ... (doctor didnt say what it was called.. helpful  ...)
and others that i cant remember

I would have thought concussion would be the most common, I have had my head x-rayed on numerous occassions.

I clearly have bones like cast iron as I've never broken anything falling off, nearest I've come is a partially dislocated hip.

Horse reared and flipped over and landed on my left knee = ruptured ACL, normally a common ski or football injury!! Know 2 other riders that have done the same when riding but not sure what the horse exactly did to cause the injury

From riding - broken collarbone, bruising.

From handling - squashed toes.

Seem to have got off quite lightly compared to some:)

Riding a recently back and very stubborn mare who turned into a bucking bronco late last year I managed to compress my C-4 vertebrae and fracture my skull. Was very lucky (mostly thanks to my hat!) and I'm back riding already :)

from falling off (no horse fall) I have been lucky and had no severe injuries.

when a horse has fallen over backwards or sideways on me, I have broken my wrist twice, broken my scaphoid bone (and had to have it plated) twice and sprained my groin (which was very painful!). On a freak accident I managed to get severe burns to my neck as the horse I was galloping was taken out from underneath me by a loose horse, and I was flipped onto plastic rails on my neck and slid along them - how I didn't break my neck I don't know.

i've only had one injury handling horses - a kick to the crotch area that had to have 6 stitches - right on my pubic bone, but fortunately it didn't fracture.

From riding
Concussion,
Whiplash
Broken vertebrae
Broken ribs
Various broken fingers
Fractured shoulder blade
Various torn ligaments, back, knee, shoulder and wrist spring to mind
Prolapsed disc

Sure there are more but those are the main ones if that helps

Broken Coccyx twice
Broken Scaphoid
Broken Wrist twice
Broken Collar Bone
Compound fracture to radius & ulna (now plated)
Concussion
Damaged ligaments & tendons to ankle
Black eyes
General Whiplash and the usual pains & strains!

On the whole think I am very lucky after 28 years of hurtling myself around at speed on mad ponies:)
