I ride my friends two horses 3/4 times a week and do pay a small financial contribution a month but its not a true share more helping her out.

Our new yard has lots of hacking and I really need insurance just incase anything happens to me or the horses. Owners insurance obviously covers public liability and the horses but I really need my own for peace of mind. I also ride other friends horses on occasion too

I rang NFU today who said our rider insurance is not what you need ring bhs

rang bhs but they said their gold membership wont cover me if anything happens as there is an exchange of money.

Any thoughts or recommendations on who I could try?:D

If you were to pay for the horses shoes, feed or wormers, would that put a different angle on the way the insurance companies view you

I can sort of see where they are coming from, they probably view it as paying to use the horse in the same way as you would a riding school, so the owner would need insurance covering the lease of horse.

In fact looking at it that way the owners insurance company could argue the validity of a claim against the horse whilst you were riding

thanks but arrgggh we thought this would be so simple! The owners horse would be covered but if I got ill or needed dental treatment etc i wouldnt get anything

BHS said their insurance should never be used on its own but should be a back up

I've got rider insurance with Petplan, it seemed to offer a bit more than bhs gold membership- vets fees if the horse in your care is injured due to negligance, tack damage etc.
