Hi guys,

Ok this year whilst at uni I have (in theory) got a job working part time at a livery yard riding livery and YO's youngsters. It is great exactly what I want to do with my spare time, and I will be getting paid for it.

However, obviously as I will be riding a number of different horses etc I think it would be stupid to not be insured. I have BHS gold cover (so includes insurance if not paying to ride a horse, but does it cover if you are paid to ride a horse!?)

If this does not cover me, what is the best way to go about getting cover? and where is cheapest etc? or should the person who owns the yard have insurance to cover me as I am riding her horses etc?

Thank you

x

Never rely on anyone else to insure you. I (and a lot of other people in the horsey world) have insurance with the combined insurance company of america (google them). They have very good policies and at good rates. BHS gold member's insurance DOES NOT cover you if you have an accident at work ... as I found out!

Hope this helps? Good luck with the job!

great thank you, yes i just rang the BHS and apparently its riding other than a business transaction (so if money changes hands in any direction, or even if you are a volunteer) it doesnt cover you!

I will check with the yard on their policies and look around for other cover!

thank you!

yes i am rather giddy about this job, its lots of possibilities riding nice horses, and getting paid for it!

Yes worth checking with the yard if they have a policy to cover you. They should as a business have employers liabilty insurance but it may be worth taking out your own personal accident insurance just to be sure that you are covered. It will also mean that you are covered if you hop on a friend's horse and have an accident for example. Personal accident insurance will also cover you if you have any number of different accidents whether at home, work, uni etc etc.

The job sounds fab and I hope you enjoy it!

NFU do rider cover. When one of my friends was exercising my mare she took this out to cover herself "just in case".

I used to be with Petplan but have recently renewed with E&L who were cheaper

Hopefully you won't ever need to use it but it might be worth looking at some other companies and changing it for safe peace of mind.

iv just talked to NFU on the phone to try to get a quote but they are having to ring me back as they are busy at hte moment (little bit annoying but hey!)

I did see E&L but didnt look, SEIB dont have a suitable policy apparently....

anyone else got any suggestions? I looked at petplan but even basic cover was £72a year!

I think NFU is one of the cheapest (well apart from E&L...)

My friend works for NFU and she was just saying at lunch time how busy there are. If you pm me your email address and details I can ask her to do a quote for you if you wanted.
