If you don't own a horse but ride other peoples horses, do you have rider insurance, how much do you pay and are there exclusions for hunting etc?

I know it can vary, but just interested in what your insurance covers

Thanks in advance

I just use BHS gold membership, £55 a year:

Has accident cover
Third Party Liability
Free legal advice
Insures any horse you own, ride or look after
Recreational use (no business use)

I got bhs membership for this reason years ago. If I'm not making use of the insurance I don't feel I'm wasting money as there are other benefits, and it is a charity. It is also cheaper than the alternative.

I still use my insurance now I have my own horse!

I took BHS gold because I was riding other peoples horses out on the road and my own insurance did not cover riding others. It was the cheapest/best value for money I could find.

I have rider insurance with E&L... Admittedly I took this out before reading all the negative comments on here, I haven't had to claim yet so I personally haven't had any issues although I am considering changing to BHS Gold Membership.

As far as I'm aware, there aren't any exclusions with my current insurance but I could be wrong!!

Right.....

The reason I asked is because I am going to buy my husband some insurance for his bday (have arranged for 9 friends to go to goape with him as a surprise, so am not as mean as I sound lol)

He rides a 5 yr old who is very green, and has hunted him once but intends on being his regular hunter next season, he is the soul rider for this horse!

I looked at E £ L.........

£30 something a yr..... Is this a terrible policy then??

Bear in mind that the BHS personal accident cover is quite basic and very limited. It only covers accidental death, loss of a limb or sight, or permanent total disability and only up to a maximum of £15000 (£10000 in some circumstances). It won't cover you for lesser injuries - which may still involve time off work/loss of earnings etc.

I am a BHS gold member, BTW, but I am aware of the limitations of the insurance. ;)

One thing to double-check is that the policy you buy covers the ownership/payment combination you have. I.e. some will cover only your own horse; some won't cover if you are paid to ride and some won't cover if you pay to ride. Def a nice (and sensible!) plan though.

He's not paid to ride, its a friends horse and he keeps it fit all year and brings it on for them, in return he can do what he wants with the horse, hunting etc........ beach... whatever
