After yesterday's stunt riding attempt (!) I want to look into insuring me when I ride other people's horses. I already have BHS Gold membership, but really only for the public liability, personal injury side of it covers you for a maximum of 10k, which isn't a lot really.

Does any insure themselves separately? What if I suffered worse injuries yesterday, how would I claim of the horse owners insurance... After all, how do you prove what happened wasn't down to you as a rider causing it?

Say I broke something and couldn't get to work, how would I claim?

Any ideas?

I exercise several horses and I got my rider insurance from the rider insurance section of NFU- national farmers union. This covers me for 2.5 million for personal liability and up to 20,000 for personal injury. It also covers me for damage to tack, a proportion of vets bills, etc. I am told that it is quite difficult to claim though, because you have to have several witnesses or the likes of them to support you.

I used to have riders insurance but thought it was a con. I, as a child and as a British citizen do not pay for healthcare because it is done on NHS, and horse I ride has insurance and through pony club I had my own insurance too. If I fall off its my fault, a few months ago I fell off (it was my own horse) and really hurt myself. Even if it was someone else's horse I wouldn't claim. If I was someone working and had an accident because (for example) the horse spooked, I would have insurance (If it wasn't my own) so that I could claim compensation and loss of earnings through accident. It's a tricky one!

Well I was riding a horse for someone, ridden him before, he spooked and bolted, bucking and rearing. Then he jumped the arena gate which is where I came off onto concrete. I think he flipped due to too much concentrate feed, he hadn't been worked properly for over a week, due to snow and his feed wasn't cut down.
I came away with bruises nothing broken, but what if I had broken something or worse? There was only me and the owner there, how do you prove it?

I'm not planning anything, I'm just glad I walked away! :)
