Rider killed at Nunney HT

Done as requested, but I did check the BE news page first and it wasn't reported or noted. It is on the BBC, in on line news feeds and all over face book, so I think BE are way behind the media

BE may be behind the media but .... you did the right thing.

Such a sad day for the sport God knows how the course designers/builders must be feeling (I don't mean to suggest there was any fault there btw)

The BBC News report names the country of origin of the rider, and gives the details that following a rotational fall, the rider had a heart attack.

With our social media status being what it is, I often read of major events before the National systems have got themselves in to gear, and the time will come, if it hasn't already when immediate families will receive the very worst news, and via sites such as this. Unfortunate perhaps, but it's part of the price that we pay for everything being 'Instant'.

RIP young man.

Sure Alec, but the ease of communication doesn't absolve us from acting according to the basic rules of decency. I wouldn't rush up to someone in the street and say "ooh Jane, your Mum's dead. Sorry but everyone in the road is talking about it".
Not acceptable pre social media, not acceptable now. I'm sure we will rediscover our rules soon but in the meantime let's try to keep to some standards. Please don't throw in the towel.

Xander, I gave up trying to change the world years ago, when I realised that the only person who I can really influence, is myself.

I'm with you (or was), but no one wants to listen to us! Mostly, I use the towel to mop myself.

Alec.

Firstly, what a horribly sad day. I really feel for all the friends and family of these talented young men.

Secondly, the point BE are making in saying 'please don't discuss on social media' is 'can social media users please not name the poor person who died or speculate as to who it was, how it happened, or discuss the details of the fall, in advance of more details being officially released'.

People seem to be confused about whether BE are asking for a media blackout or media only to report the extent of what BE have themselves confirmed and published. It is the latter. They are not saying, and nor should they, that the media shouldn't report the extent of the statement they've released themselves. It's illogical to believe they could intend that when they've published it themselves on exactly the same platforms and will reach as many or more people. Proper media blackouts are very rare, are either pre-agreed with media outlets or nothing is released to them at all, and happen for reasons which wouldn't apply in cases like these.

The only detail about poor Jordan which was initially reported beyond what was in the BE statement was his nationality - which was released 'officially' by the Nunney organisers, who later, presumably once realising how few Canadian riders would have been there, or once advised by BE, endeavoured to retract it. But the local papers couldn't reasonably have been expected to have such knowledge and reported the statement in good faith and had by then published.

I for one am relieved that the responses on social media were far more mindful of the family and friends this time than in some other fatal incidents in the recent past.

And I wish Ben and Jordan's loved ones every sympathy.

BE were not 'behind the times' they correct wait to ensure family members are informed, sadly not all press are so respectful. I sincerely hope all were notified in the correct manner before. a very sad day :( :(

I want to make it clear that my original, now deleted, post, did not name any one, mention nationality or give any other detail. it said that a rider had been killed at Nunney and it was terrible news and I passed on my sympathy and condolences to the connections. I deleted it at the suggestion of another forum member.

At no point did I say BE was 'behind the times', I said they were behind the media (BBC et al) in so far was they were too late in asking for a media blackout. Which they were - it was already out.

as Alec said, this is the price paid for instant 24 hour news.

sorry I miss quoted but having been present and being aware of more facts than still have been released despite not knowing Jordan it has left me rather shocked and very saddened, (it doesn't help reading national newspaper reports which are filled with inaccuracies regarding the incident). I actually felt that most people were very respectful re social media for once. Also re another reply I was not aware his nationality had been initially released by the event mainly because I was there at the event. I could write more but there is no need or point the only thing important is the sport has suffered a very dark day and my thoughts and condolences are with both Jordan's and Ben's family :( :(

i think everyone was shocked by what happened yesterday and no one would intentionally post information to make it a more difficult situation , its human nature to want to show support and respect in a situation like that , its not important now and not worth arguing or feeling bad over

i think the main thing is all off us all feel the same shock and sadness for the accidents yesterday
RIP ben and jordan , thoughts are with there friends and family , thoughts also with the organisers of the events and the connections of the horse that was also lost
it was a truely tragic day :(
