Riders insurance, why do I need it and what does it cover?

I've shared four horses over the past 2 and a bit years and only one has asked for a contract and if I have insurance. I took out the BHS Gold membership as that comes with some insurance. But to be honest, I have no idea what it is covering me for!! My subscription has now run out and I will renew it but I was wondering why do I actually need it and what does it cover?
