As I'm going to be part loaning (I hope), I'm looking at getting some rider's insurance. I saw BHS offered it but then read some pretty negative comments. Does anyone else have it? Who with? And if its not too cheeky - how much does it cost you? Thanks :) x

It depends on what you want the insurance for? BHS Gold membership includes third party liability; but not personal accident insurance. Do you want something that will pay out if you are off work through injury? In which case you need accident insurance - petplan do a rider policy which seems well thought of. If you want something to cover you against anything that happens whilst the horse is in your care then you need third party liability. If you want to cover vets fees that is something else again - but as this is only a part loan I'm assuming not?

I've not heard any negative comments about the BHS cover. We have that through Gold Membership which you need of you want to do the training anyway. We also have pretty much the same cover through Pony Club as a result of membership there. But neither cover you for personal accident.

Thanks Shay - that explains quite a bit. I think Petplan sounds a good bet but I'm maybe thinking I need to speak to the lady I'm loaning off first to talk about what is required in terms of costs - that might aid me in deciding what level of cover I need.

Thank you again.

With regards to what I heard about BHS - couldn't find much information but saw a few posts where people were complaining about struggling getting them to pay out (from a few years back) and asking people to use their home insurance instead or if they had third party liability elsewhere to go there.

I just bought some rider insurance yesterday as I'd read that the BHS didn't cover me if I made regular payments for a share horse (which I do).

Have you done a google search for rider insurance? I found I needed to weed out the ones that were selling pet/horse insurance as the horse isn't mine but I wanted one that covered vet bills, tack and public liability just in case. If it's any help to you, the search terms I used were 'rider insurance horse'. I looked at loads, dismissed loads and ended up going with E&L Insurance after comparing the remaining options.

Hope that helps in some way :)

I have previously had rider insurance through PetPlan. I never made a claim so I can't comment on how easy they are to deal with in that respect, however I thought that what they covered (3rd party, personal accident, emergency vets fees and equipment) was great for the price (£65 pa). It gave me good reassurance when I was regularly riding other peoples horses for them.

When I have my ponies on share with others I ask them to get rider insurance simply because it limits my liability should there be an incident. That might be what the owner is asking you to get? Petplan is the only one I have experience with (or more precisely friends do) and I'm not aware of anyone having problems. The same is not true, I'm afraid, of E&L. They do have something of a reputation - just look them up on this forum....

Good morning :)

Just to clarify: a personal accident policy is included as one of the many benefits of BHS Gold membership. The cover is provided by SEIB, along with the £20 million personal accident / third party liability insurance that is also a benefit - another major one being that we couldn't carry out our charitable work in all areas without our members' support!

The personal accident insurance covers very serious injury or death, so if you're looking for something that will pay out if, for example, you break a leg and are off work, then you wouldn't be covered for this on the policy included with Gold membership.

The full policies and Key Facts for both the personal accident and public liability are available to view anytime at www.bhs.org.uk/membership/types-of-memberships/gold-membership.

We're sorry to hear you've heard negative feedback from a few years ago about these policies, and it's not representative of the overall feedback we do get - although we appreciate that's easy to say! Please feel free to give the team a call on 02476 840506 or email membership@bhs.org.uk if you'd like to chat through any point or concern with them.

:eek3: OMG. Thanks for that. I'll see what I can find on them and possibly make use of their 14 day cooling off period. They just seemed to offer a better deal than Petplan. ...no use, of course, if they're not going to pay out. Thanks for the heads up Shay.

It's standard practice for any insurance company to check whether you have cover elsewhere so any third party liability insurer will ask if you are covered under your home insurance as your not supposed to be double insured otherwise they each try to say the other policy has precedence and it can get tricky
