Sorry just read somthing in the visla thred and didnt want to hijack the tread but.....
are ridge-less ridgebacks really written off from the breed?

we just did a project on their genetic disorders of dog breeds.
In RR and a lot of the advise to stop their problems appearing was to breed in high quality ridgeless stock with "normal" dogs because the ridge is dominant anyway....

I only have one rr and she does have a ridge but I have heard horror stories saying ridgeless pups are destroyed. I find it heartbreaking if it is true.

Yes its true, they are with most breeders put down at birth, I believe this is still the case, not just ridgeless pups but also those without double whorls/rossettes. (one, none or more than 2)

Where I bought my boy from the Ridgeless puppies were being sold as 'pet home' only with endorsements restricting the new owners to breed - now there is nothing to stop them breeding from the ridgeless pup but they generally offer a refundable deposit o the pups once they have been neutered.

There is physically nothing wrong with a ridgeless Ridgeback - it is purely cosmetic and does not effect their health by not having one.

My aunt breeds ridgebacks and i know that her and the majority of the other breeders do not do this and think it is wrong.

my aunt herself has had her fair share of ridgeless pups and they for sure were treated no differently and as said by kjfit were sold with endorsements attached so that they cannot be bred from. And she sold them for a fair price making sure that they went to sensible homes instead of just giving them away. She also never hids the fact that theres a ridgeless in the litter if she gets one.

having said that the above doesnt apply to all breeds and a small percentage will write ridgeless pups of and not wat them attached to their breed lines.

I have 4 mad bouncy ridgebacks, I bred a litter off my bitch 2yrs ago and we had 4 ridgeless pups out of the 10 - needless to say I did not put them down as these are technically the healthy ones without the deformity ie the ridge!! We found great homes for them and they were some of the best pups in the litter and went before any of the ridged ones as people who didn't want to show or breed snapped them up! I do know alot of breeders who still do bump off the ridgeless ones as they see it as a tarnish on their bloodlines - same goes for any pedigree animal I guess - they don't want it seen that their bloodlines are "faulty'! I think it's very wrong to bump off perfectly healthy pups there are plenty of responsible people who want a lovely family pet.
