Hi

I had a myomectomy at the end of August. I rode again for the first time about two months later - a half hour walk out and I was exhausted. I built up slowly over the winter and cantered for the first time in March. A week ago I had a lunge lesson. Huge progress from where I started but it has taken a while. I am still not very fit and don't have many stomach muscles yet but I am working on it. I hope to try jumping in the next couple of weeks.

I was just wondering what experiences other people had had getting back on a horse after a major operation. Did you worry that you wouldn't hold up physically? I'm not nervous about the riding but I'm nervous sometimes that my body will let me down.

Thank-you in advance for sharing your stories

I rode after about 2 months I think and found it very theraputic but tiring and a bit sore!!! However I then got a DVT in calf due to all the inactivity and the chemo so had to stop....was not impressed! It took a long time for me to build up my strength again but a lot of that was due to the chemo rather than the op....I was just so tired all the time. Still better to be tired and alive!

Hi, i had a myomectomy 5 years ago and rode at a similar progress pace to you. One thing i would say looking back is i wish i had done more pilates or yoga or something to improve my tummy muscles etc, apparently it is still noticeable that i am weak there (according to my instructor!) although not weak enough to be completely rubbish but cant hold my horse together properly using just my tummy muscles so have big muscly arms instead :) anyway if you have aspirations for dressage or anything similar i just thought i would recommend focusing on this because 5 years later i wish i had sooner!! hope this helps and you are back to 100% soon! x
