Just wondering if anyone on here had experience of riding after a laparoscopic appendix removal?

Doctor said and I quote, 'well, as you just sit there, you should be fine to ride after a week. Actual exercise would be different'. Aaargh.

It's been eight days so far... Would like to know what people who understand think.

Chocs and painkillers on offer!

Please don't rush and give yourself extra time, even if it was laparoscopic (I think that's the key hole one?), you've still had an invasive thing done. I know how hard it is to resist the urge to jump back on ASAP!
I had my appendix cut out after it burst, I had complications and was in hospital for what seemed like ages. As soon as I came out I wanted to see my horse, but was so weak I could barely lift the fork to muck out! I had to go back in hospital and have abscesses drained. Eventually I discharged myself still with an abscess, as I had just had enough, I took a risk but luckily for me I healed OK at home.
I literally got straight on my horse as soon as I was back lol In total I did not ride for about 6 months, my longest break ever! Horse just festered in the field. I really sympathise with wanting to get back to riding, but please give yourself extra time and make you are well healed first! You do not want to go back in again!
Sending the healing vibes :)

just to ad not wanting to scare anyone, I was told mine was a worst case scenario...but my point is it's better to wait a bit longer and not over do it :)

Even though it was a laporascopic procedures, you have just had MAJOR surgery. I had my gall bladder out and it was six weeks before I felt "stable" enough to ride, the surgeon told me it takes six months for the inside bits to heal properly. Please don't risk riding yet, we all know it's not just sitting there!!!

Sorry but an appendix is not major surgery ... I'd give it 2 weeks and see how you go

Dr blitz

Gall bladder surgery and an appendix are not comparable... A gall bladder IS major surgery...

Admittedly I had mine done as open surgery when I was 12 but I got back on in a week, but just walked round the fields for a max of 15 minutes as it still hurt getting on and off. After about a week of this I was doing clear round jumping again. I was allowed to run and things still, I was just told no contact sports - so I got out of netball and football at school!

I was told to take 3 weeks off work (laproscopic again) so I stayed on the ground for about 2.5 then built up gradually from a ten minute plod to proper riding. It was prob 6wks post op before I could really use my core properly for schooling without it twinging. At the check up I told my surgeon I kept getting the sensation like (I imagine!) a stab wound was healing and still sore...he was all, duh, what do you think keyhole surgery is? :)

Mostly people say 6 weeks for tissue to heal. I was told 6 weeks after my appendix op - However I had emergency open surgery and was over 70 - and was left a wreck. GP told me that surgeons under estimate the time needed for recovery both mental and physical. Being back on a horse doesnt necessarily mean you can ride just as you used to. When I went for my first lesson, there was a point trotting where I thought they should send for an ambulance. Bit of a turning point in my riding actually, as I took the mare aside and told her that I was incapable of anything but the tiniest cues - to which she responded like an angel. I took everything so slowly. Most patients need a year GP said. And as you are not riding and in shock, it is easy to get unfit and to put on weight. I thought at my elderly age, it was really the end. Though it turned out not to be. I lost the weight did a lot of riding and got better through riding.
As for it not being major surgery - Dr Blitz - I too have a surgeon in the family and it depends entirely on the case. For my OH appendix wasnt major and for me it was. My advice OP would be not to force your body - but dont indulge it either: watch your weight during recovery, take exercise and ride safely.
