I know i am a long way off this stage but, this morning i have been pondering about when i will be able to ride again once i give birth.
I am expecting twins who i have been told will arrive in feb/march - not very exact i know!
It would just be fab to know how long it has taken others to return to the saddle???

For myself, we are still unsure if it will be a natural birth or the more than likely c-section, so experiences of both would be fab! i know for c-sections they say not to drive for 6 weeks - i cant imagine not going to the yard for that long!!!

My daughter was born 'naturally', but was quite a difficult birth. I was back in the saddle a week after she was born - I put it down to the Arnica I took after the birth!

I rode 4 weeks after my 'natural' birth with a good seat saver! I am due to have my second baby next week by c-section and anticipate being in saddle no later than 10 weeks (but hoping for sooner as it seems like ages!) I will let you know.......

Wow TGM - thats fab!

i'll remember to get some Arnica!

I really imagine i will end up with a c-section as its two! Good luck with your birth G3mma! I can imagine it will be something like a few months after a c-section?

Because i cant ride at the moment - it's all i can think about!

Was told by my doctor to wait for my 6 week check with my first ( had a horrendous time

) With my second it was about 2 weeks, to be honest I think you know when you will be ready, depending on how your nether region is feeling

My instructor and her head groom were both back in the saddle within 2 weeks, out jumping again after 4 - both natural births. Both also rode until 6 months gone but were more careful about what they rode/what they did!

I had an emergancy c -section, and did wait 6 weeks but mostly because I was quite ill afterwards due to loss of blood during c-section and what turned out to be gallstones so really didn't feel up to it. It was then about 3 months before I really felt fully up to riding fitness again and not just a sack of spuds. My tummy never hurt but I did flop about a lot more than before!

I would have thought if the c-section was planned it would be a lot easier as you won't have the hours(and hours and hours.....) of labour first.

My instructer rode again two weeks after a 'natural' birth, and then evented at PN level 2 months later! She rode till about 5 months gone, but then her horse started playing up so had to turn him away!

I was told 4 weeks by the doctors!!Pleased i did too, know way i could have ridden after a week!!(natural birth and no stitches, just too bloody sore)!I think it depends but....i wouldnt rush it,you have to let ya internals recover!!!

I rode my boy until I was 32 weeks pregnant, then had to stop because I struggled to get on and off.

Got some 'funny pains' whilst poo picking my field on my due date. Saw my midwife later who told me I was in early labour. Baby born next day.

Stopped off at the stables on the way home from hospital.
Back in the saddle (and back in my jods) a week later. First cross country a month later!

Thanks everyone.
My OH has banned me from riding from the start really as i like temperamental horses! I rode 2 days before i found out i was expecting, and it was on a naughty mare and i was prob pushing my luck considering i was pg! The only other time i have ridden was when the mare my OH was riding started napping in the indoor august bank hols, as he is a novice i told him to get off, and as soon as he turned his back i hopped on, went round maybe 5 times max to get her to stop napping then realised it just wasnt worth it so left it on a good note and got off.
My problem is i am really struggling to find people to ride for me whilst i cant ride, so may have a field full of rather 'fresh' horses when i do get back to riding!
Really interesting thou to hear about other peoples experiences, esp bramblebits, who managed despite the infection!

Thanks everyone!

First of all congratulations on your pregnancy! Twins - how fab! You should PM Sal_E she's having twins due in Feb too!!!

You'll have a lot in common - and it's easier chatting to fellow horsey preg folk - I know that when me and Racingdemon were preg at the same time we were on the phone all the time comparing notes! LOL!!!

RE: Riding... I was riding until 8 months and then got back on after 3-4 wks - I had a natural birth - a friend of mine had a C-S and she was back in the saddle at 4-5wks - I know it was before she drove anyway!
Good luck

Congrats on your pregnancy. I had my baby 5 1/2 months ago. I had a very difficult natural birth with stitches etc, I got back on after 5 weeks for a walk and tried then but was still really suffering so I left it until 12 weeks and have ridden since then.
The thing to remember is, if you overdo it too early on then you may find you end up in a heap after a couple of months. It takes a long time to recover mentally and physically after a birth, particularly with twins and you need to take your time and not push yourself too hard. Just enjoy getting used to your babies and don't put any pressure on yourself to get back to riding.
If you have any q's let me know, happy to help

I'm expecting baby no 3 in 2 weeks. I can't remember when I got back in the saddle after the others, but it was definitely a few weeks as I had loads of stitches both times and was very sore.

I think you just have to go with what your own body tells you. Good luck!

There are a couple of factors to bear in mind. If these are your first you may not know just how tired you are going to be after the babies arrive. Secondly, your pelvis will soften ready for delivery, and it can take several weeks to return to normal, any kind of injury during this time can have very long lasting effects. I had a jumping fall about 5 weeks after my C-section and completely mangled my pelvis - over 13 years later it is still giving me trouble, and all because I was in a rush to get back to competition.

hi i rode till 8 months, then waited 6 wks to the day to ride out, i had a c- section that took ages to heal, could only walk for a few weeks. was jumping 3 months after tho?? it may hurt but its great to ride again??
good luck with the twins.
my daughter is just 1 now and it does work with the horses, she is horse mad already??

Crikey, am very impressed. I found it difficult getting dressed before lunchtime after having a baby. How on earth do you find time so soon afterwards? But well done for having such amazing energy. Feel weak just thinking about it!

My 1st was born by c-section and I drove after 4 weeks and began riding after 10. Found riding to be a fantastic physio after c-section. Started riding at walk only to start with when that didn't hurt anymore i progressed to trot then canter etc.

Second was a natrual birth and I started riding again after a couple of weeks.

Good luck with the twins.
