I have just started riding again after a break of about 10years and cant believe I have left it so long. Cant wait for the next lesson, after my first lesson my other half said I was grinning from ear to ear.

I had a 14 year break from riding from my teens to aged 30. Fab. I've never looked back. I started taking my daughter to riding lessons and decided I may as well do it as well - was instantly rehooked, and started looking for my own horse. Wonderful. Better than flying. Enjoy it!

Congratulations.

I fairly recently came back after a 27 year break and am getting a horse vetted Friday. So beware the bug. :)

I've also recently returned to riding after a break of nearly 30 years! Lesson days were known as "smiley Thursdays". I'm more nervous about spooky behaviour now, but more excited about jumping than I was as a child. Oh and I went for the sensible option of a green 4yo as my first horse!!!!

Noooooooooo! It's a slippery slope, leading to destitution and a propensity to smell of horse wee for all of eternity. Get out while you still can! :D

I started six months ago after a break of nearly 20 years. :D

Rhino's right... I'm hurtling down that slope (grinning ear to ear), smelling of horses, make-up untouched in bathroom, boots with heels ignored in favour of paddock boots & chaps, purchasing show jackets rather than fashion jackets, all spare money and time diverted to my addiction! And I'm loving it!!!

Fortunately, non-horsey OH is very understanding (or a bit daft). Welcome back to the 'dark side'

I recently returned to riding after a break of 23 years. I'm really enjoying it and wish I hadn't left it so long. Its taken me a while to get over my nerves and due to this there have been times when I've thought of giving up but I'm so glad I've stuck with it .I would love to find a horse to share/loan but I've never owned my own horse so my stable management knowledge is very limited. I'm considering doing the BHS horse owners certificate and would welcome any advice on this?

You could get the pony club or bhs manual and have a read. A number of riding stables will do own a pony day - although you may be with a lot of kids ;). If that's too scary you might find that if you ask they'd be willing to let you follow one of the staff around for a few hours.

I suspect that many people would be happy to have a mature lady sharing their horse even if she needs to learn a bit about management.

I went back after 20 years completely away from horses.

A friend asked for my help with her seriously injured mare and of course I said yes:rolleyes:.

Walking onto that yard on a cold wet evening where all the horses were in and settled for the night munching on haynets and moving around in the straw. I smelt the smell, heard the muffles, felt that feeling and said out loud, "Oh s**t!":D

Enjoy!!

Oh I know that feeling. For me it was at a tack shop last weekend - think the smell was hoof oil, but it all came rushing back.

Thanks for your advice Paula, I think I might ask at the riding stables if I can hinder one of the staff for a few hours a week. :)I know they do own a pony for a day but as you said if would be me and a load of kids so I think I will avoid that.

Ive been looking out for a suitable horse to share or loan but find the majority of the adverts state 'not a novice ride' so its proving difficult to find anything. If you dont mind me asking where did you find yours?

I'm actually buying and completely cheating by putting the horse and me into schooling livery if she passes the vet check.

You could try putting an ad in the board at your local tack shop. But do take care, my first pony on loan as a teenager ditched me in more ditches than you would believe.

Good luck with your new horse. I will consider putting an ad in the local countrywide store and tack shops. Bit worried that I might end up with something completly unsuitable, reading some of the posts on here it does seem a bit of nightmare due to sellers/loaners not being honest.

I'm now 8 weeks in after a 10 year break and I love it so much!

My horse hating husband even loves how happy it is making me so all good!

My riding school does part loans of there school horses which is great so I have the support to remember what I need to do before I may have to splash out next year..... I am thinking Irish x

I'm easing back into it I don't think I will be able to ride again myself down to a back and head injury but having my son has been a total excuse to have another pony albeit it on loan - sadly no more but we are looking again - have forgotten a lot but it doesn't take long, here and a few good books have helped catch up some of the terminology has certainly changed and become more fancy. Never thought I would say that I love mucking out or even pulling the dreaded weeds but its been fabulous :D Can't wait till we can find another.:D:D

oh well done, i'm delighted for you. it does give you a great sense of happiness when you've done it. Get someone to take pics next lesson. we'd love to see them. xx

Welcome back to the world of straw down your jumper and smelling of horse poo!

I wonder do I hold the record by coming back after a break of 34 years?:D

Also, I earn very little money, so no schooling livery for me. Bought a (rather unsuitable ) horse very cheaply and straight into DIY livery.

Most of my family don't know I have a horse because the disapproval I'd get would just get me down. Just because I'm 56, have osteoporosis an a history of life-threatening asthma/horse allergy and no money.

Honestly, what's their problem? ;):D:D

If i do ever find anything I will be definitely insisting on a trial period. Keep us updated on how you get on with your horse Paula if it passes the vetting.

Fiona I think you do hold the record come back so far! I think its great that you have had the courage to get a horse even though you know it will be meet by disapproval. How are you getting on with it?

Your far braver than me but if you thought about it too much and worked out the expense you would never do it.:)

Haha! I only just manage to get on, I must admit! I'm very happy though. Mollie and I won't break any records, but as long as we don't break any bones either, we're fine!

I had reached a point in my life when it's now or never so I just went for it. I do have a generous friend who has promised that if I need financial help, I have only to ask. I will only use that if myself or Mollie suffer major health problems. Moll's insured for accident.

So my lovely mare passed her vetting so I've gone and bought myself a horse. But it's not like I don't know what's involved.

Hopefully Mollie will be a good safe horse for you, and she make's you happy so what more could you want:D

keep us updated on how you get on with her.

I'm pleased to hear that she passed the vetting:D

It gives me confidence to read that it is possible to find a suitable horse!! It seems that you just have to go for it otherwise you may never get anything.

Again keep us updated and let us know how you both get on with the schooling
