Anyone know whether you have to sit a certain number of theory hours (I was told this by someone but not sure if true) or can you just turn up once you've booked it and sit the test?

When I did it two years ago it was perfectly acceptable to just turn up and take the test. I would do this if I had to take it again as I've had the training now, and know what is required.

I did it ages ago. The exam day had a theory test as well as a practical. I did a preparation day ....which was necessary for me! I enjoyed both days. This made it expensive, but money well spent. Good Luck

At our RS you do full course with test at end! I couldn't afford it as it cost £100. However my horse took the test as they were short of sound horses at the time. He passed! At least the two ladies who rode him did.

I believe that the official BHS line is that a certain number of hours is 'strongly reccomended' but this is not usually enforced. I would reccomend having one session though with a trainer who does it often as it can help you with 'exam technique'. (you know, that BHS way that doesn't really exist so the examiners say lol)

I don't know the answer to your question, sorry, but I do think that it is worth getting some training beforehand (you probably are anyway, but thought I'd share). I failed mine (many years ago mind, so things may have changed) for not looking over my shoulder before I set off... I had top marks for everything else... The thing is I set off from a blinkin field - what on earth was I supposed to be checking for? Speeding sheep?! So, it is worth finding out exactly what things they check for before sitting the test imo.
