Ok, CC here it comes.

Your main fault comes from your hips. They aren't open enough which is why your lower leg is further forward than it should be. You need to do some leg stretching exercises from the hip, bring leg up, out and down, and get your seatbones underneath you instead of sitting on your fork.

When you've done that you'll have a much looser thigh and won't grip with your knee and you'll be able to use your legs more effectively.

Also, try not to stick your bum out...that is causing your back to hollow. This will come with the hip thing though.

Agree with above. Your sitting in the 'chair position' which means your lower leg is too far forward. I'm still trying to improve my position from this. You should be looking for a line down from shoulder - hip - heel in your pics.

ok, i do understand that
i have tried getting more open at the hips

i guess if i do that then ill be able to lengthen my leg

i will practise this

thank you

ive always ridden really short and legs forward like a hunter...
and since ive had wilma ive been trying to lengthen and open

i will work on this, i was aware of the hollow back, but i dont know why i did it today, its not normally that bad :S

x

as above really. it looks like you trying to hard to keep your back straight and making it hollow. relax though your back, neck and shoulders it will help open your hips aswell.

i think im trying to hard to get her to work properly and im not thinking about my riding enough :s

is there anything i can do to relax more?
x

You do exactly what i do.

I am having problems fixing it partially due to a back injury causes tension in my lower back so i cant really open through my hips.

However i have been getting there by riding without stirrups. I pull my knees up so im like a jockey and then wiggle around(best way of putting it) to find my seatbones, this helps as i sit to the rigt so it makes me more aware. Then i take my legs out back and down. Thats is where i find it really hard but as i said i am getting there.

It is making a difference, but now my instructor realises i sit like it partially due to pain she has laid of my ever so slightly about it haha.

She is lovely. Just keep working and working. Im goign at the same things with my riding. And i understand when you say you are thinking about her not you. When i stopped this and thought about myself, it made soooo much difference to my lad!!! once i was better in my position many problems i had to iron out before had gone.

Have fun

thank you

thats very helpful

i may not have a saddle soon though :s
but when i get it back i will start to think more about me, as she is getting better and softer in the hand

the more you think about her and how you want her to go, the more pressure you put on her and yourself. my horse always used to go badly in dressage for me because i was trying to hard to make her go well but put someone on her to do it for fun and she got fantastic marks.

there are no quick ways, i did alot of my schooling out hacking so that when i went in the school and asked her to work it was easier as she already knew how to go, had the right muscles so it was more relaxed. lots of walking and thinking about my position.

i would think about you beathing, if your not going to have a saddle i would ride with out it anyway. it will get you to open your hips and relax other wise you will ping off if you tense and grip to much (well i did

).

although she is softening in your hand she needs to soften though her back and ti do this you need to soften though your hips and back to allow her to.

thank you for your advice

im going to try everything you have suggested

im going on holiday shortly after the saddler has been, but i will probably ride bareback if i still dont have it after holiday
tongue.gif

she will go on the walker every few days to keep fit and supple though

i have started doing lots more hacking, as i am loads more confident and can go out on my own now (she used to just bounce and go backwards at the gate) i know i have control out hacking now so i do more of it

The most obvious thing to me is that your back is very hollow, meaning that you lift your hands and grip with your knees, and put your lower legs forwards to balance.

Try to tuck your bum underneath you a bit more - when you sit in the deepest part of the saddle you should be able to feel 3 points of your seat (your pubis at the front and 2 seat bones at the back) the pressure on all 3 should be even.

Once this is sorted, try to have some schooling in walk and trot with no stiirrups - this will encourage you to sit deeper in the saddle, with a less hollow back and with your legs more underneath your hips. Whilst standing still take 1 leg off the saddle at the hip, take it backwards and then roll our thigh in so that your knee and toe are pointing more forwards than out. This will get your lower leg closer to the horse. Do the same with the other leg. Walk on without changing anything. It's hard work and will make you ache, buts its good in the longer term.

Try using a 'balance strap' on the pommel to help you keep your hands lower and still without pulling up and back on your horse.

Horse is working nicely, just needs a bit of fitness as you say, and will go better for you when you can sit deeper and softer in the saddle. Overall you're doing well though.

ETA - sorry if that sounded patronising, it wasn't meant to be, just sometimes it helps to hear something said a different way.

thank you

lots for me to work on

its taken me 2 years to click with her and shes really starting to get it
smile.gif

now weve got that and control i will work on me now

:D

xx

thank you
smile.gif

will try that too
isnt it odd how you tell people when your teaching them to breathe and relax but you dont do it yourself :L:L

im so glad youve all been nice... would of not been good if youd of been harsh
frown.gif

yea i do it when im travelling to shows and stuff

im a lot less tense than i was
im determind to be as perfect as possible, which is why i ask advice all the time :L

With regard to your seat and learning to relax, try and get out a bit more. Like you have said already you do go out hacking. Try and do a bit more of it. Perhaps a 60/40 hacking to schooling I would say. Personally I find hacking more pleasureable than being in a school working hard to not only keep the horse working in outline and into the corners, but also working yourself just as hard. If you go on a few more hacks and learn to improve your leg and stature while both you and your muscles are relaxed then you may find it easier to translate this into the school.
Then just think of the school as being an extension of a hack that just makes you and your horse work a bit harder as you are going in circles more rather than mainly straight line hacking. It should be enjoyable for you and the horse in my book. That's the way I would tackle it myself personally anyway. Good luck

it might sound really stupid, but do a number of weeks without stirrups! you will end up with legs about 3 inches longer than you started, you have to sit deeper and straighten up etc or you will just bounce right on out ofthe saddle as if you are too tight in your back etc you cannot move with her!!
also, breathing out helps, like try not to hold your breath (I do this sometimes and my instructor screams BREATH! and all of a sudden everything works again! hehe)

She is a lovely horse, and in your pic of ur mum n sis I just wanted toput the caption: "Run mum RUN!"
