I am having a riding assesment at Oaklands college tomorrow to see if i am able to get on the bhs Stage 2 course. Am a bit nervous, dont know what to expect, any ideas??

When I was thinking of doing a diploma at college my riding assesment:

We got there got assigned our horses
We rode for about 10minutes
I then got told I got in

That was it it could be different at another college I was a bit annoyed really as they just didn't seem to care about how any of us rode.

Before i did mine we hat to send information in about us, how long we been riding, what we can do, and we must be-able to trot without stirrups.

Then we were given a horse suitable to our ability and then we would ride in a group and then do a few things on our own with the instructor. They had a women sat on the side watching and marking. I passed :D

Good Luck with your's tomorrow x

You will probably be asked to ride at walk trot and canter, showing your ability to perform the transitions correctly, you may be asked to jump a small jump. Knowledge of horse feed and tack is also possible, some assessors may ask you to tack the horse, some may ask you to untack - it really depends on who you get on the day and how many assessments they are doing. You may be asked to ride more than one horse -it will depend on how well you get on with the first one. The main attributes they are looking for is enthusiasm, willingness to learn ( that is not be a know-it-all) and your ability to deal with a pony/horse. If you get into a mess whatever you do don't panic. Just take a deep breath, start from the beginning and try again. They look more favourably on someone who will be calm and try again than someone who panics and takes it out on the horse. They may ask you what you think you did right/wrong - if you make a mistake admit to it and say what you should have done better.

In all honesty they want you to do well, they will not expect you to know everything or why would you be doing the course. One of my daughter's friends made a real hash of her attempt and was asked to come back and redo it another day, she then got her place. It really depends on your attitude - you will not be penalised for not knowing something - just do your best and take your time. I am sure you will do well, Oaklands is a lovely place to study. Enjoy it and let us know how you get on.
