Riding clothing - Jods or Trousers?

Hello, would like to get some across the board opinions on riding clothing that's available in the UK.

Not sure if it's my age (40's and a normal size 12) but I have decided I really don't like wearing jods or breeches anymore and wondered if anyone else feels the same?! I bought 2 pairs of bootleg riding jeans last year which I live in and have now found out that they've been discontinued ! I'm now finding it impossible to find a similar replacement. Is it just me or am I looking in the wrong places for them?

There seem to be a few people on my yard who also don't like jods/breeches but can't find an alternative. I pointed they towards my ones and that's how i found out they've been discontinued! I have spent a lot of money on trying to find the right thing for me and although my riding bootlegs weren't cheap they were worth every penny as I use them all the time (will just have to keep them going now til they literally fall apart!).

Does anyone else find the same problem and if you do are you of a 'certain' age??!! :o ;) Suggestions of where to look would be great.

Thanks.

I am 46 and rarely wear my breeches and boots anymore, it's far easier to stick to my jeans, like you I'm a size twelve but just feel a bit uncomfortable in them now.

I find that M&S stretch jeans do the job, but I prefer the low waisted ones which they don't seem to do now.

There are some riding trousers available online which are quite expensive though, here's some Tuk Tuk, which might be my next investment:- http://www.classicequine.co.uk/tuk-tuk-clothing-c-207.html?osCsid=4c5241f607f33062bcd1b6f16268190d

I am nearly 50 if that matters and would not consider riding in anything other than breeches, I would stress this decision is your choice and yours alone if you wanted to do a 'Godiver' I doubt we could stop you. Perhaps in the summer I will try a mankini in day glo orange it will set my Shires eyes off in the sunlight and might stop the traffic - if not get it to pass a little wider than normal! - If I do I will try to post a picture. But wear what you want its your decision, just wear a hat! Best wishes Ian

When I was a teenager (a VERY long time ago, have to say!) there was a firm called "Jacatex" and they did these fantastic riding trousers. My mum bought me a pair, and they were the most versatile riding garment I've EVER had. Mounted up, they'd look like jods, but you could wear them as trousers coz they weren't all tight round your legs like joddies were.

I never took them off, and they never wore out; I just outgrew them - when they stopped just below my knees I figured it was time to get some "grown-up" jod's; and hated them.

A few years ago I did buy some lovely Harry Hall riding jeans; think they were called "Edmonton" (not sure). They're the same sort of garment - look like trousers/jeans but have knee patches so you can just hop on your horse and hey presto, but look exactly like ordinary jeans so then if you need to go back from the yard via Sainsbury's you don't look a freak. You DO need to wear chaps with them tho'...

Good luck! There's a definite need for a decent "riding trouser" IMO - manufacturers please take note??

I've got a pair of jodhpurs with an elasticated waist! (im a 12 and just find them generally more comfortable as i hate the zips and fastenings digging in whilst riding!) They're really soft and comfortable and not skin tight! The material is also quite thick so they don't show many lumps and bumps! Could try some of these? They come in lots of different colours!

I wish i could wear bootleg jeans, but find unless i start with them 3 inches too long, by the time im mounted they are up by my knees??

Thanks for your replies so far :) Mmmmm I think I'll put the Godiva on hold for the moment - don't think the world could take it!! :o

Not heard of Jacatex - sounds like they were great!

With regard to the age question - it struck me that I never felt like that when I was younger and the people I steered towards the Musto bootlegs I have are all mid 30's/40's/50's (and I suppose have more disposable income than youngsters - they weren't cheap!).

Will have a look at all you suggest - thank you.

I too loved my musto riding jeans and miss them:(
I am currently riding in 7 for all mankind jeans, but they are really too expensive to go anywhere near the horse.
I got some good denim jeggings type things from Gap in the sales, but theyre not really sturdy enough, but we're good in the warmer weather.
If anyone has a stash of size 14 musto jeans, I can offer a loving home:)

Were they Ariats, by any chance? I had some really nice, stretchy bootleg Ariat riding trousers and, as they were a little snug (!) gave them to a thinner friend! When I went to replace them, couldn't find them anywhere (I think I got them from Derby House in the first place)

I am also 'of a certain age', but am not afraid to wear jods - I chose a dark colour and those with a bit of (hold it all in) elastic to them. Will keep an eye on this post in case anyone finds the perfect answer! ;)
