Selby & District seems to be quite good, I think Mayflower on here is/was a member. I'm just getting round to sending a cheque off to join Howden & District, but that's a bit far from York, not sure whereabouts you are.
Look on the BHS website and it lists all the clubs. Most let you do a few things before joining so maybe just try a few out.

I'm a member of York and District they have a website.
They are based just north of York I think it depends where you are based.

I was a member of Selby and District last year, but to be honest I didn't feel that I got much out of it. I helped out at about 3 events and only actually went as a competitor to two but I think that is more to do with the types of shows they had.
They do some quite regular dressage, I think and they have 2 or three showing shows every year which are always really well attended so it depends what you are into. They do do some good stuff for kids.
It may just have been me, but I always got their correspondance too late to attend anything so I didn't renew.
Howden & District is a fairly new club & very enthusiastic/keen to get more events scheduled in. They have started doing some stuff at Port Royal and are trying to book Willerby Hill too, so good venues, but is a little east of York. (Might be alright CurlyWurly?)
York and District are just up to the North I think (but still in York, if you see what I mean). They have some very good clinics (Heidi Woodhead I think does some of theirs) and some regular events. I haven't been but know of a few people who really rate it.

I was a member of the middleton hunt branch, they're very near York.
Theres also the Sinnington branch who are super friendly and always have lots going on.

Which club did you decide to join. I decided on the one in Howden and I must say I have really enjoyed it. We have used good venues and had some really decent instruction and they have managed to keep the prices down. plus they are really friendly which is a bonus.
