Hi all, while struggling to hang on to an opening gate with the end of my dressage whip the order day, it occurred to me that a whip with a hook/handle on the end, like proper hunting crops, would been very useful!

Have scoured my selection of horse catalogues & no where seems to sell any kind of crop with a hook on end, except of course hunting crops!

So do they exist? Does anyone have one?!

I do have a hunting crop but us antique so would rather not use it if there are alternatives out there :)

That it would, but would rather not use one (have one already) as was hoping there was a less antique version, would be gutted if I broke or lost a hunting crop!

Surely there must be a plasticy rubbishy crop out there with a handle?! :(

Maybe the question should be gates that can open with riding crops,do they exist? D
Can't you train the horse to position itself so you can open the gate without one

Unfortunately I trained horse rather too well to push gates open with her nose so if she gets too close to gate, she pushes it!

The whip with handle would make life easier as wouldn't need to get quite so close to gate to pull it towards me so could do that whilst turning her big ginger nose away from the gate lest she try & push it :)

I know hunting crops work, but looking for a plastic type version as really wouldn't want to break a lovely old hunting crop :(

Ps, like the walking stick idea, might be a but long tho, maybe I could carry it like a lance when not using it

I used to have a lovely long one from 1900 with a hunting crop end to it and regrettably sold it on ebay for not-so-much :( I regret it now as I need it for when I go out hacking side saddle as Hattie does not get on with a cane and I need something a bit "whippier" than a cane or hunting crop but with a handle at the end.

Schooling whip version???? Surely you mean a walking stick?

Cor strewth there ain't half some kinky gear on here .......... but then again feeding "whips" into a search facility and what do you expect??? :)

But seriously, didn't know you could get whips with gate-opening devices that aren't hunting crops. You learn something every day!

This thread is spooky, I was only talking about this yesterday with a friend from the yard! I think a normal whip with a "handle" for gate opening would be fab! You could have different length whips - jumping, normal and schooling, and lots of colours too......
**Wanders off pondering how to go about making and selling such a thing.....**

I have a sawn off walking stick, with a straight handle. I think my sister saw it at a car boot sale and chopped off the end. Not too elegant, but very, very useful.

When I used to have to deal with a lot of gates I used to slide a martingale stop to the top of a schooling whip - it hooked onto any gate that didn't need lifting. All my sticks had martingale stops on the top. They are really cheap too. Completely forgotten this until I read this thread - may have to try it again!

Off to purchase a martingale stop tomorrow, unless the milliput idea works....keep us informed Twelve Neighs!!!

Still think someone could be making a packet out of actually making normal crops with handles on them!!
