Just wondering what everyone's views on this are. Some people I know ride their horses straight off the field; others bring and stand them in for an hour or so before riding. Opinions?
Tend to bring in as soon as i get to the yard then do all the jobs i need to i.e muck pick, make feed, check water. Find then about an hour has gone by anyway and saves doing the jobs after riding. Would happily go for an amble straight from the field but if i was going to school or jump like to give her a bit of time to digest everything she has been scoffing!
I happily ride from the field for general riding. I guess when doing something more strenuous like competing, they'd have about an hour in the stable before riding.
I guess in the wild they would have to be able to move quickly regardless of how much grass they'd had, if a predator was around?..
Unless the belly looks very full I ride straight away but I am not doing anything very strenous. Normally by the time I have got them in, groomed, tacked up and generally minced about they have had 20 - 30 mins.
If I were doing some serious competing then I may bring in morning/the night before - friends serious jumping pony had to be in 24 hours before competing or she was too bloated and pigged out to jump the really high fences they competed at.
The only time I would not ride striaght from the field is with a horse on limited turnout (i.e a few hours) on good quality grazing. Otherwise always ride straight from the field.
Normally straight away, unless riding in morning after a night in. It usually takes me about 20-30 mins to groom, tack up anyway. I'd be there all day otherwise!!
