Hello all!

Just hoping for some reassurance (I may be being silly!) - I have recently got a new riding hat which I love. Only ridden in it a few times and been super careful with it. I’ve even bought a padded bag for it which it gets carried around the yard in.

While at home yesterday, it managed to slip out of my hands... maybe a 2 1/2 ft drop onto carpet.. so annoyed with myself! Now I know the advice about dropping riding hats onto concrete/a hard surface and replacing them. Does anyone have any thoughts on a small height onto carpet?

I could be worrying to no reason but wanted to know what others thought.

Thank you!

Lawks I don’t know how fragile they are but, I have to confess, mine has taken the odd tumble out the back of the car boot at times and I’ve carried on with it. I tend to replace them every few years. But don’t take safety advice from a random poster!

I don't think I'd be too worried. The reason you're supposed to get a new hat after a fall/strong impact is because the helmet is designed to dissipate the impact force by compressing the padding inside the hard shell of the helmet. You might be able to see damage to the hard shell, but can't see if the padding inside was compressed. However, since your helmet fell without a head in it, I don't see how that could have affected the padding inside very much, and without much weight in it, a short drop and onto carpet rather than a hard surface, I wouldn't expect the hard shell to have taken damage either.
That would be my reasoning anyway, but the decision is of course up to you!

I wouldn't worry. It is important to replace a hat after a serious knock - but I would not count a short fall onto a carpet in that category.
