Hannah now has FOUR riding hats. The last one she had to go to the show in and it's been on her head 8 times. I took her to the saddlery and they fitted her for the hat. Whilst I was there I told them that she keeps having hats and after a few months they go big on her head. She insisted it was a fitting problem and I wouldn't have any troubles with the hat I was buying

Well, guess what, it's too big now! It now sits slanted on her head and I can get my fingers inside the hat at the front.

The fitter said the problem with Hannah is that she has a round shaped head and the hats are quite oval in shape. Once they give around the temple to accommodate her head, they are then too big as they're too long for her really from front to back. (Does any of this waffle make sense?)

My question is what do I do with all these hats that are too big....we've tried the dial hats thinking we can re-adjust them when they give but that one seems very deep for her head and sits over her eyes.

Can you have a hat padded out to fit properly again, and if you do is it as safe? Other thing is....any of you suffer the same problem and if you do, what hats have you found that work for you.

What hats are you buying? We find that round heads are better with champion or JTE hats. Charles Owen tend to suit oval shaped heads better.
Also, perhaps you should try a different shop. We sell hundreds of hats & very rarely get anyone back in with this problem

She has a Harry Hall velvet hat, a Junior JTE hat with the dial adjustment on it, a skull cap (across stables can't recall make) and a Charles Owen Velvet hat.

The Junior JTE fits the roundness of her head perfectly but is too deep for her head and sits over her eyes.

She doesn't look freakish when I look at her head but seriously...we're collecting hats!

Try and look for "low profile" hats as Ive also found on me that some hats are too long back to front. My head is also rounder than than oval and Ive found the best hats for me are Charles Owen J3 (skull), Charles Owen Hampton (velvet hat) and the one which fits me best of all is my lovely GPA Xtreme. Love it to pieces. I tried on a JTE and it was dreadful, it just sort of "sat" on top of my head! I used to have a Gatehouse which fitted well except again, it came down a bit too far over my eyes and back of my neck.

I too have a round head and when i had my last one fitted the fitter put the padding in where it needed to be to stop it slipping. I would go back to the saddlers and ask them to do the same with Hannah's.

My eldest has the venturer hat, which has moveable padding. this also means it can be removed to be washed, but with a bit of adjustment it fits both of us (he's a 54 ... I'm a 57 in champion, and this venturer is a 55 and fits us both.. figure that one!!). I'd definately buy one again. pricey, but worth it!

Have you also looked at getting a hat with lacing at the back? and made sure all the straps are adjusted properly?

Charles owen do fit tall oval shaped heads I have found. My champion skull cap is quite round but deep. It looks quite big like an egg on the head though so although it is comfy it doesn't look too cool! My patey is amazing but these are made-to-measure so they will fit but they cost a bomb and mine rarely comes out of it's box!!! (it's got to be a real special occasion lol) My GPA Pikeur Titium hat would probably fit your daughter. It has a very low profile and is quite round. It is very comfy and you hardly feel like you are wearing a hat, you can get them quite cheap on ebay now.
