I need to replace my skull cap and something that crossed my mind, is the ventilated one's sound like a great idea, but when it rains, surely it is going to leak ?

The third one, I only ever trust Charles Owen as they are the only ones made in the UK and more often than not other hat companies use the parts that Charles Owen reject....

God really

I was always thought champion were pretty safe ?

The way the ventilation slits are made they let air out but nothing in I think
I have/had the ventair peaked version and I never got a wet head

I did a lot of research on Charles Owen when I had a job interview with them.

From: http://www.charlesowen.co.uk/en/about/index.php

[ QUOTE ]

The consequent demand on us to perform at an increasingly sophisticated level has led to the formation of a truly formidable family. So lets examine its make up. It is a wonder that anyone wants to supply Charles Owen. The standards we set, make us one of the most demanding customers. Thank goodness we have competitors that are willing to buy the components that fail our checks at a discount, otherwise the quality set for a Charles Owen product would not be commercially viable. Our suppliers do tend to be lifetime partners who see manufacturing moves away from Europe and becomes centered on large volumes of distinctively average quality.

Charles Owen is the majority brand in Britain and we are very proud to be part of the marked reduction in head injuries to riders as determined by independent research. Designing it and fitting it is not enough if you do not ensure that the inevitable variance in the performance of materials, machines and personnel is not strictly controlled. In the strive for greater profits, many brands are outsourcing their production. This loss of control can only compromise the brands ability to consistently deliver the best. Charles Owen builds all its helmets in a two million pound purpose built production facility in North Wales. Attracting the best caliber of personnel and the selection of the best materials is a constant pursuit.

From personal experience I have found that this dilemma is rare. Each brand of hat has a slightly different shape & therefore it is unusual that one person fits into every brand. I would absolutely love an HSI or a Ventair but they really do not fit me correctly. Therefore I wear a Charles Owen. My advice is go & try them all on & buy the one that fits the best.

I currently have a ventair which I love but it is now in the hat graveyard

but we had the hat fitter put padding in so it fitted me .

the fitter also had no problems with the fit of the HS1 or the CO hence my dilemma .

I have an odd head

I like Charles Owen. For reasons I won't bore you with (work related) I spoke to their MD earlier this year. I was very impressed by the degree of commitment shown and their level of expertise. I have not spoken to the other two you mention. We use Charles Owen, partially because we like and trust them, and partially because they fit us best

That's another thing, CO are the only company who train all of their stockists to fit their hats so that the customer can be guaranteed the right fit....it doesn't matter how safe the hat is if it doesn't fit!

Charles Owen and the HSI both fit me well, but the HSI fits me better.
I find the HSI much more comfortable, and I like the thicker straps.
The HSI comes down lower on the back of the head, however the CO has the protection at the back.
In the end, it's all down to personal comfort and price really.

I like the HSI because it's been through a different type of safety testing aswell, with poles etc. aswell as the standard testing, which is why it's deemed safer.

I scoured the north east looking for a HS1 hat and was gutted to find that it didn't fit me well and wasnt that comfortable. As others have said, try them on first and you will know straight away which one is for you

Charles Owen dont fit me. Same with the HS1's! But i love my Vent air, it is the nicest most comfortable hat ever

Thats why I'm so tempted to stick with champion and buy the skull this time instead !

Then again the rate I get through hats I may have had them all by the middle of next year !

The HS1 is made in the UK, I thought the HS1 had the best side impact protection of all of the skull caps it also passes SNELL E2001, PAS 015 and BS EN1384. My daughter really likes hers.
