I had a hat fitted some time ago, and bought a champion (velvet) in a 59cm. Some time later bought another hat (again, fit in a shop) which is a charles owen venturer scull hat, 55cm.

Thing is, BOTH hats fit me perfectly!
I now need a new one, because my velvet one has gone AWOL and my daughter decided my scull cap made a good football

I want to buy online because TBH my local tack shop doesnt have anything under 70 pounds, and I havent loads to spend on one (probably about 40 or 50 pounds). But I'm unsure what measurement to go by? Should i go for another charles owen skull in a 55cm?

If you're happy with the Charles Owen, then you're probably safe getting another one via mail order. I think it's the shape of them that varies from make to make - some definitely are rounder than others. Otherwise you can get some brands with adjustable padding inside for fine tuning.

When I bought a new hat last year, I tried on a variety of makes and models - with a qualified hat fitter - and they all varied so much, it was unbelievable.

The Charles Owen hat can vary from model to model though. When I bought my AP McCoy skullcap for race riding, the shop didn't have it in stock, so I tried on a different CO skull to see what size I need, tackshop ordered the APM one in the size that fitted, but when it arrived it was too big.
I think you're definitely better off trying them on, even if you don't buy it in the shop, but find a better deal on the net.

champion and charles owen fit completely different

When I went from a champion to Charles Owen - I went down a size.

My new charles owen hat is the same size as my older one
