I am going on a riding holiday in May to Spain and need to get insurance.
Has anyone got any recommendations or ones to avoid?

What insurance are you after specifically?

I have public liability and personal accident insurance through countryside alliance membership, which is worldwide, so no need for additional insurance when I go overseas. If you already have insurance (which everyone should!!) you may very well be covered in Europe.

Snowcard provide excellent insurance cover for all sorts of activities, horse riding included. I have always used them for my climbing trips to the Alps.

Sports Cover Direct are the best in my opinion. I sell riding holidays and have chosen to be insured with them personally for my trips. Here's the site: https://www.sportscoverdirect.com

Having said that, they are far more expensive than many options as they provide a high level of cover specifically for horse riding. A budget alternative would be something like travel insurance via The Post Office as they cover horse riding as standard on their TA policies, offer good prices and are reputable.

ETA: I haven't had to make a claim myself so I'm not sure what they would be like in that case. Please do also check policies carefully to see exactly what is said regarding riding. For example, some of them state you are not covered unless you are wearing your helmet at the time of the accident.

Many of the policies I have looked at specifically exclude jumping, so check wording carefully if your holiday includes jumps.
I remember when I went on a horseback safari I rang company I was planning on insuring with to specifically check they were happy to insure me. The only thing they seemed concerned about was must wear hat _ not sure how much help that would have been if falling off in front of a lion!

Thanks all. There isn't any jumping involved just hacking in forest land and along beeches.

At least I have got some options to look at now.
