What is the correct ettire for a show riding horse at local level. I have a black and a tweed jacket, black long boots and a range of jods. Horse currently is in a snaffle with a black cavasson bridle. He does go lovely in a double bridle also so thats fine if needed. He is black and I have got him a Green, gold and cream browband. Not sure if I can cobble all that together, I dont mind buying some bits and pieces but not really sure what we should be wearing. Thanks in advance!

Ah - see what you mean now. I thought your thread heading meant riding an ENTIRE horse, ie a stallion. But you mean ATTIRE. Change the heading and you might get some help x

Ditto box of frogs - what is etire?

Attire on the other hand.....

It depends on what class you do. From the bottom up....

Black long boots - yes. Johdpur boots and clips are really only acceptable on children in lead rein / first pony stuff.

Tweed jacket, ivory or cream johds for working hunter, riding club horse etc.

Black jacket, same Johds for some breed classes, but not M&M which is tweeds. Some classes use canary johds.

Coloured browbands are permissible in riding club horse etc. Double bridle if you can for working hunter; but even if you're in a snaffle this should have a plain browband on.

Only use white gloves if you have very still hands. You should carry a showing cane, rather than a whip. Some classes require you to have spurs - if your horse doesn't like them get the dummy spurs which are just a band of metal with no points on.

If you are just starting out at local level don't worry overmuch. Few judges will mark you down on the wrong attire at lower levels. Just note what the others are wearing and ask advice from the judge if you want to. At higher levels / qualifiers you will need the correct kit - the show seretary can often advise if you give them a call.

technically, you can wear either navy or tweed in a riding horse class, but in reality, everyone pretty much wears tweed - I can't recall the last time I saw a navy jacket in a riding horse class.

Jods/breeches can be cream, canary, fawn, beige - never white or coloured.

Boots should be long leather worn with spurs.

Shirt and tie/

Hair in a bun.

brown, fawn, beige, mustard gloves - never white or black

Cane is more correct but a short whip would be OK

Horse can be in a double or snaffle - but you will find most in doubles.

about riding horses (the pic shows a rider in a championship hence the navy rather than tweed jacket).
