I'm off on my hols to Boston over February half term and would love to see some of the area from horseback, as long as they haven't got snow! Can anyone recommend where I should go?

I don't know that area, my parents are in Virginia where I have done a bit. The best I would expect would be a trail ride, which you can find good yards by searching the local nature reserve on google I would expect.

Unless you are a regular, I find that these things can be rather expensive. An hour 'trail' in VA for $50, which although is only 25 quid, is expensive with the current exhange rate....

But google the area, 'riding barns', 'trail rides', 'pleasure riding' will be your best bets.

Mmm, you may not be so keen to ride outside in Boston in February - there's a reason all the horsey folks go to Florida! (It's roughly the same latitude as Southern Ontario, although tends not to be as cold.)

Seriously, you will likely be hard pressed to find anyone taking out trail rides that time of year since it is likely to be around freezing at the warmest (on average) and not just snowy but often wet. A little further south, Virginia or the Carolinas say, it is possible to ride outside year 'round - it's like here but drier - and they would be hunting by then, although probably not showing outside yet.

Its currently -2 at my parents house.....Georgia is colder, so the South ain't doing to so well.

Yeah....anyway, it was upstate New York in February when the Horse Whisperer was filmed apparently...and that was lots of snow!! Not a great example though. Good film, was on the other day.....did you know, the horse in that was the same horse that played Ginger in the most recent Black Beauty film with Sean Bean!? Oh waffle...

The problem with Boston is there are very few riding stables around, you would do best to go up to Hamilton up route one, but as suggested most horse people have gone to Florida.

If you send me a PM I can offer you a carriage ride of Boston (depending on the weather) if you want, and as long as traffic is not too bad (and we get out of eyesight from the boss), I'll let you drive a bit.

Carriage ride would be great! Just phoned best mate who I will be staying with and they've had a foot of snow since last week. Trail riding looks less likely! Off to Snow Mountain for some skiing instead!

Oh - I'm going to Boston in May, for my niece's graduation. I & my sister are going for a week.

Our niece said there is a Morgan farm not too far away (I don't know what she means by not too far, as distances in the USA are not the same as UK). She thought I might be interested as I have a british bred Morgan.

Any good horsey things to do/see in mid May?

Ahhh...American distances....close is 30 miles, especially in the South/Mid West..

As I said, really not sure about up there, should be warming up. Check the American Morgan Website?

Morgans....they are seriously good looking animals. What do you do with your one.

Speakeasy - Skiing sounds more likely!

My Morgan. I drag him out of the field and he has to do whatever I want to do that day.

I do some Morgan showing in the Hunter division, and Road Hack.
I ought to jump, but it abut 30 years since I did any serious jumping. He does dressage, I have done Trec - orienteering on horseback, plus jumping/control obstacles. I do Pleasure Rides and go hacking. He was broken to drive before I got him, but I haven't done any driving nor got any facilities/equipment, plus he is a bit big at 16.00 hh.

He does quite well in dressage, mostly because he is so pretty I think the judges fall for him, because he is EXTREMELY laid back and doesn't put in any more effort than the minimum required.

Our biggest triumph was winning the Bareback Dollar I think!
