Just wondering if someone could answer these quick questions for me?

I've bought some white leg bandages for Mo, but never bothered looking at them first. Having always used boots, i dont know if there's a difference between travel bandages and riding bandages. Can you ride in the bandages that tie? Or do they have to velcro? Because these ones tie and the tie looks messy! Do i tuck it in or are they not meant for riding in the first place?!

And also, where are bandages meant to start and finish on the leg?!

Oh, and are you meant to put something underneath the bandage (like gamgee), or just bandage straight on?!

My advice is that if you arent sure, dont bandage!
Too many injuries can be caused through incorrect bandaging for it to really be worth it.

Oh no, dont get me wrong I CAN bandage - I've had a horse who shattered his splint bone and spend 6 months in bandages, so i'm a pro! I've just never RIDDEN in them.

Ah ok then!
Exercise bandages should be slightly elasticated, they should do up with velcro- the only ones with ties are tail bandages....
Different people like different techniques, personally I use a bandage gamgee pad and start my bandage just below the knee and wrap it around underneath the fetlock joint, many people dont go beyond the fetlock but I like the extra support there. I dont bandage the pastern.

You can just about see my front bandages here-

Brilliant, thank you! Stupid shop for selling a pack of 4 tail bandages and confusing me!!! Wondered why they were so cheap! I shall invest in some proper ones....if i decide to stick to this dressage lark!

Thanks again.

I have leg bandages that tie! And they are definitely leg bandages. I tie them and tape the ties but dont tape over the knot. You have to be careful not to tie the knot too tightly and It must lie on the outside of the leg, not on front/back of the cannon bone.

Ohhh....Well i've just found the packet thing they were in and it says "Leg OR tail bandages", so maybe they're usable after all!

What do you tape the ties with? I understand not wanting the knot on the front or back, but can it not tie on the inside of the leg (hide the knot better!) ?

Well after a week of box rest, we took her in to the hospital for all of the tests. The vet asked us to trot her up first....and she was 100% sound!! After practically hopping on 3 legs for a week, she wasnt even a tiny weeny bit lame! So we took her home and she's back in work, with no problems! No idea what was wrong with her, but it sorted itself out thankfully. The vet said that maybe it WAS an abcess, but he didnt know. Maybe she was just tired and wanted a week off!

Hi, if they are stretchy bandages, then they need gamgee underneath. If they are fleece polo types then you can use them without Gamgee.

Sounds like you have stretchy ones....fleece are much easier and usually between £10-15 pounds

All old fashioned bandages tied, you just tuck it into the bandage but makesure it doesnt' make a pressure point.

I have some fab ones that are half fleece half elacticated that way you dnt need gamgee! Ties are what were around before the wonderful world of velcro!
Exercise bandages are not supposed to go as low as stable banadages dnt forget

I'd just be really careful you don't do them too tight. I bandage wounds tighter than I would exercise bandages. To be honest, I really hate using bandages and much prefer boots. Unless I'm using them over Porter boots, in which case they need to be fairly tight.
It is really easy to damage tendons if they're too tight, I've seen it happen in racing and p2p..........
