I dislike them - they have 2 good uses kiddies on ponies and vaulting.

If the horse pecks , it cannot stretch out and you could end up in a heap.

This will not improve your riding or help in any way.

Presumably it's fine if you're riding on the lunge and you're doing balance stuff without reins. Gives the horse a contact to work into and so means the horse works better giving a better trot learn to sit to etc.

This is a bug-bear of mine. One of my boarders does this and I did mention to him about the risks some time ago. He didn't take any notice but I felt that at least I had made him aware.

Last week he had an accident in them - horse almost broke it's neck in a bizarre turn of fate. All ended up well and since then I haven't seen him using them at all.

Thanks for all replies.
Just thought things may have changed as remeber when young it was a hanging offence to jump in a standing martingale but nowadays its ok.Personally just thought it would 'fix' the horse head ,would rather get it to listen and work properly(I may well be wrong in this thinking tho sio feel free to correct)as well as there being a safety aspect
My daughter has used draw reins at times on one pony but uses schooling on other horse. We have market harborough, bungee rein etc but only have used them in past when felt it was appropriate.
