I'm going on holiday to the Lake District this summer and will have the chance to go for a few rides. Definitely going to Murthwaite Green for their beach ride but where else do people recommend? I've probably got a budget of about £30 max for each ride, looking for schooling or hacking or both. We're staying in Bowness on Windermere, thank you!

Bigland hall is on the a590 to ullswater. I've been there lots when it was down in flookburgh, and once at Bigland hall.

Lakeland equestrian has assess to good riding out, but is very expensive for what you get IMO.

Holmscales is ok, but is mostly roadwork and fields. Close to Kendal.

Witherslack Hall is worth a visit, good hacking. Is closer to Kendal but still easy access.

Sockbridge is one of my favourites alongside Bigland hall. It's up at pooley bridge, near ullswater, so you get a change of scenery but damn good riding. Definitely recommend it. Pooley bridge is a good day out as well, and you could hop on the ullswater steamers too (minus horses!)

Rookin house, when I went, it was all roads bar one tiny Bridlepath where we had a canter. It's supposed to be a good adventure place though as they offer 4x4s/quads etc.

Crook barn stables at coniston may be good, but when we went it was technically closed for winter and I'm not sure we got a brilliant ride out of it as the horses weren't fit enough really.

I've been about a bit in the lakes as you can probably tell.

I haven't been, but friends have, and say its brilliant so can I also suggest a trip down honister slate mine.

You'll love Bowness, definitely go up to Ambleside, and over on the car ferry to over sawrey to the Beatrix potter house, and into hawkshead.

Thank you, we camped last year but are planning on having a holiday cottage there this year :) Went to Ambleside, Hawkshead and Beatrix Potter's house- all really lovely! Thank you for the suggestions, will check them out :) Anyone got any more?

Ooooooohh the Apple Pie in Ambleside. Great for breakfast with the dogs after an early morning walk! And a custard tart to take away, still warm.......

Sorry, no recommendations for riding.:o

Sister lives between Windermere and Ambleside, and we both like food and our labs.:D

ooh sounds lovely, you should try the daisy café (or something to do with daisies anyway) in Ambleside- dog friendly and does lovely soup for good prices!

I've been to Rookin house, I didn't hack. I had an hour private lesson and it was really good, they have some really lovely and skilled ponies. Plus a lush indoor which has all seating and is practically brand new. The outdoor is nice but you get noise from the clay pigeon shooting. :) x

Where to start :D depends what you want to do really if you wanted to splurge the heavy horse centre. If you wanted to do something different witherslack hall is lovely and do reasonably priced sidesaddle lessons which I would recommend.

Another vote for Bigland - I have ridden there and they have a good range of horses and are very professional. We went on a 3hr hack and it was a good bit more than £30 I have to say! Their website is good if you want more info.
