I haven't been on this forum since I lost my horse to colic in January. I'd owned him for 9 years so was pretty devestated after it happened and didn't really want to go near horses for a long time.

Anyway, I'm off to the Lakes (Coniston) for a week in a couple of weeks and thought it would be nice to try and book a hack. Does anyone know of any decent riding centres not too far from Coniston. I have seen that there is one in Torver but can't find out any information about it. I would like to go for a decent ride (probably 2 hours) and not just a slow treck.

If anyone has any info of where I could go please get back to me.

Thanks

Hi welcome back,

I go to the coniston area every year on holiday, mainly for sailing but we have done some riding in the area too.

Both of the ones on the road between Torver and Coniston are reasonable. One is called Spoon Hall but I can't recall the name of the other one.

However.....

If you can stretch your budget to go here:

http://www.cumbrianheavyhorses.com/

it's worth every penny. It's probably about half an hour south of coniston on country roads but the horses, staff and rides are brilliant.

I'm going to be going back next year.

I have my own horse at home and ride a few times a week and still really enjoyed it.

Another vote for Cumbrian Heavy Horses, I went a couple of weeks ago and loved every single minute, it was so different riding an 18.2hh Clydesdale, they are adorable. Looking forward to going back and doing a beach ride.

Hi

Thanks for the replies. The place I was looking at was Crook Barn stables in Torver but they don't have a website so I'm not sure what type of hacks they do and what the horses are like. I have seen the heavy horse place advertised but after not riding for nearly a year I'm not sure if I'd be able to walk for weeks if i ride there!

You would be fine, I expected them to be REALLY wide but honestly they werent and so comfortable. I cant recommend it enough, even in a group of mixed ability I had at least 4 good long canters with no worries about pulling as up as the horses slow down and stop themselves at certain points. Great fun!

I went with 2 people who hadn't been riding for over 20 years each, they were both able to walk the next day! As above, the horses aren't as wide as you might think!

Just had a look at their website and it looks like a really good place so I might give them a try. I don't suppose it matters what type of horse I ride I'll probably be a bit sore the next day!

I would like some info on the place at Torver though if anyone has been there as it's nearer to where we're staying.

Thanks
