My OH and I will finally be getting married in June and given that I have a riding holidays business, we are going on a riding safari in South Africa for our honeymoon. He has ridden a little bit before but not consistently and hasn’t learned to trot, but I chose a destination with plenty of non-riding activities as well. However, he has decided he would like to ride and has taken up lessons again and is losing weight to be inside their limit (the destination takes all levels so doesn’t matter how his skills progress).

Currently he rides in jogging bottoms but I would love to find him something more suitable for the trip. He is 6’4” and a sturdy, strong sort with big calves and I definitely can’t see him being comfortable in classic breeches (he also likes to be as inconspicuous as possible). Does anybody have any recommendations for riding jeans or similar for tall guys please? I think I may even have asked this before but I’m forgetful and can’t find it, sorry if so!

I’ve seen a few options but it’s hard to find options with long leg lengths and I think elasticated bottom breeches will be too tight on his calves. Best I’ve seen so far: https://www.kramer.co.uk/Rider/Mens-Riding-Wear/Mens-Breeches/Mens-Jodhpurs-Cass

Look at this site. All for men with a good choice.

My OH rode Western in Wrangler jeans. As the name suggests, Wrangler jeans are intended for riding and have a softer seam on the inner leg. One needs to buy them a bit longer than jeans for everyday walking as they ride up when one sits on the horse.

We were told in USA that men who went on long Western hunting trips were advised to wear women's nylon tights under their jeans to prevent rubbing.

I like the look of the Kramer ones. Very similar to the ones my menfolk rode in years ago, but I dont think they had the stretch like these modern ones do, which I would imagine will make them very comfortable. I had them sent over by a friend in the USA, you could not buy them here back in the day. Those really look nice IMHO, just shown son and he said he would be happy to ride in those, more so than the traditional tight ones.

If he wants something that looks like normal jeans, ariat have quite nice men’s jeans that say they have a no-rub inside seam, my friends husband wears them for most riding (except hunting) and rides several a day. They come in normal blue as well as some other colour, quite like these:

I dont really like my modern breeches with stretch. The difficulty is that they are stretchy not just round the waist but up and down. My waist line is notional. So as I hack, my breeches gradually descend. I rise in trot and the breeches fail to rise with me, meaning that I dismount with a bare stomach.

USA store SHEPLERS, online western jeans cowboys use. My son is 6’6” and when we go to USA I have a big order done to be delivered to our accommodation, that avoids UK import duty. But buy one or 2 pairs should not go into the duty levy. They really are brill jeans

I'm a mere 5'11-3/4" and still have trouble finding jodhpurs/breeches to fit.

Krämer's website doesn't help when it proposes size selections like this, either.

I usually buy a size 54 or 56. Sometimes a 54 will fit, sometimes a 56 is too small.
