Riding on the road with dogs off the lead

Is illegal but I do it all the time down the windy country lanes round me. having my dogs on the lead would be more dangerous because they would be less able to get out of the way of a car.

Also they run in front and behind me meaning that cars slow down before they get to us.

My dogs always come out hacking with me - if we go on the lane and we hear a car I can call them and make them sit on the verge/passing place until the car passes. Being gun dogs they are also trained to the stop whistle.

I disagree. I've been doing it for the last ten years and have never lost a dog.

If I had very good control over my dog I probably would, as I like to include him as much as possible. Not that I'm ever going to have control of him!! It's a free country (allegedly). Also I believe Take That once had a song called "do what you like". Surely you'd be mad to ignore them?!

You see I think it depends on the road and the dogs. I have five dogs and very quiet roads with no pavements and no verge.

If a car comes round the bend and the dogs are off the lead then they have a far better chance of not being hit than they do if they are on the lead.

basically because they can get right into the side of the road.

Also they tend to be about twenty yards in front or behind me. they are very quiet lanes and the only real danger is from idiots driving too fast. they meet the dogs before me and it makes them slow down because they see them first.
 
I would with a well behaved dog but would not trust the dog we have now! I think that it depends of the type of roads you live on and also if its just a short distance to the track or bridleway.. We live in the middle of no where, not many cars, large verges etc... xXx
 
Just think safer to leave at home. And inevitably, it would be the driver who was blamed who would obviously be "driving at breakneck speed round a blind turn, and then started shouting obscenities at me". Yes, they were doing 25, and yes, I would be mighty peeved to find that I had either squished a dog or put one's life in danger. Not fair on either party imo, and on horseback you have little control.
 
I personally wouldn't do it, and I wouldn't like to be the driver who comes round the corner and finds them in the road, however slow I was going. But I don't have dogs so just my opinion.
 
Have been doing it for years and will continue to do it.

Dog is well behaved, trained to stop, it and down on command. as well as commands such as 'over' (crosses to the other side of the road) and 'in' (get into the hedge)

Never had a prob and it DOES make cars slow down - even just seeing the dog sat quietly in a gateway.




Out of interest - to all those who say 'leave the dog at home' ... do you walk your dogs on the lead all the time on country lanes?
If not, what's the difference?
 
Mine are gundogs, trained to the whistle but I still would NEVER do it.

They are both very good and very obedient but Dogs aren't robots, their not ALWAYS going to do as their told, it only takes that one time when they throw a deaf one. If a car was coming at the same time when pooch doesn't do as told then you've only got yourself to blame if pooch gets run over.

Plus if I was the car driver that killed your dog, I've got to live with that for the rest of my life because you thought it was ok.
 
Having almost hit a loose dog on the road very recently, I would suggest you dont let it off the lead, no matter how well trained it is. If I see this particular dog again I cant garentee I'll miss it

That is PRECISELY my point. Consider the two situations:

a) Ypu come round the bend and there is my dog off the lead which you narrowly miss. You slam on your brakes and lo and behold twenty yards later there am I on my horse.

b) I am faithfully complying with the law and have my dogs on the lead you come careering round the corner and there am I. Riding my horse with ive dogs jutting out in th rod and unable to evade you,

IMO situation a) is far safer
 
but why do you have to take them out at all?
I don't walk ours on the country lanes at all, I take them to the park or go across the fields.
 
I have taken my old dog out with my horse, but on a very quiet road, he was very well behaved and my horse is used to my dogs being around him. If he was likely to run off he would of gone into the field, certainly wouldnt of run off down the road, no rabbits there!
Wouldnt do it with every dog or horse and certainly not on a busy road.
I bloke near us lets his dog out on the lane and drives behind it in his car! Its a horrible dog too, has killed a dog in the past.

I wouldn't walk a dog without a lead on the road at all. As good as they may be, they are animals. Fields yes, I suppose, as long as there are no good bushes with pheasants leading on to roads. You really do need one idiot, and they are out there, and thats it. Done. And you will blame the driver won't you?!

Lots of dogs ARE totally led by voice commands. Very good and well done to you. But there are stupid drivers, and antiantianti's photos show a very nice sharp corner, and four dogs in the middle of the road. What if the wind is going the wrong direction?

If I was to come round a corner and see all those dogs, I would SLAM on my breaks, if it was icy, the ABS may kick it, and I may skid. I could crash, cause damage to myself....or a passenger. More important to me than a dog. Sorry if that seems selfish, but it IS true.

We dont have parks where we live... to much in the sticks... just lanes and fields, probably much like "baggage"
