Riding other peoples horses

The other day I got to have a shot on my friends new horse, and so we hacked out. We then went into the school and she was bemused as to why I did not want to school on her horse, and so I explained.

I feel that, due to my leg aids not being very good (dodgy left leg) that I did not want to mess up the progress that she has made on this young(ish) horse. This is mainly prompted but the fact that I know it can take me up to a week to get Beau working properly when he has been roughly schooled by someone (I am now more selective about his riders!)

Am I weird for thinking/feeling this? If I do not feel that I would benefit a horse, but would instead hinder it I will not ride it - especially if it is being trained - if it was a school master it would be different.

I agree to an extent. I work for an eventer at weekends and if she asked me to school one of her horses, I wouldn't feel happy doing so, as my riding is not at the same standard as hers. However, if she asked me to exercise one of her horses in the school, I would be happy that I could work it competently to the level that it was already schooled at, if you see what I mean?
 
I dont own my own horses but am trusted and respected by a lot of people around my area and through this have got rides on 5 different horses. soon to include a string of polo ponies

I am riding 2 specifically for schooling one of which is 4 and has only been broken since last summer.

I love the fact people trust me to ride and bring on their horses if they didnt there would be no way i could afford to have my own

Your not wierd, I think its a very sensible thing you did, especially since its a young horse. I doubt that you would have done anything bad but its always better to be safe than sorry

Well I noticed that out hacking he was doing exactly the opposite to my horse in terms of bend etc, so I think its because I was over doing one of my aids, but since I dont use my left leg very well I jsut couldnt correct it, and on a hack its not so bad, but not in the school. He takes his new owner 45 mins to work in well, adn she is working hard with him and he is jsut so wonderful (never seen just a large horse float the way he does and his trot was amazing!) I just did not feel I could do them justice.

AND THEN, tonight Beau was going well (he is on new feed and Cortaflex and feeling VERY well in himself) and I let one of the yard girls have a quick go - with the VERY specific instruction DO NOT ASK FOR A HARSH CONTACT, and what did she do - right under my nose, took up a contact and then leg yeilded him - thankfully her phone rang before I went to ask her to get off - it took my an hour to get him back to relaxed again

. I have been very very picky about who rides him and so now I htink it is deffo Just my sharer and I and 1 other girl (she just exercises him, not schooling or really asking much of him).
