I have an 8 year old 14.1 ex riding school cob gelding. He is lovely and I can not fault him so far. I believe he was ridden 4-5 hours a week in the school and has never been “overworked”.
EXCEPT - when I got him he’d had 3 months off due to covid/lessons not happening. So he’s a little chubby. Nothing horrendous.
I am now bringing him back into work, I’m riding 6 times a week, 4 hacks ranging between 30 mins - 1 hour with a mixture of walk/trot/canter and schooling him twice a week for 30 minutes, doing a mixture of exercises - flat work, some poles, little jumps etc. He is turned out in a bare-ish paddock, hay soaked, very small feed of chaff once a day. I Just ride for fun so no competing to train for although I want to take him to do a bit of xc and to clinics etc in the future.
I’m currently working from home so this works for me, but when I’m back at work it will be harder to maintain. Any tips on a good work routine for this type of horse/rider, that I can fit in to my daily life without burning myself out?!x
