Hi all,
My Mum has always just ridden my horse or kindly friends horses when she has come to visit, but she wants to branch out on her own now

She is looking for a riding school that does really good hacking near Edinburgh (she is in Musselburgh). She doesn't want to take lessons, just to hack, but not one of those where you just follow the bum in front

Can anyone recommend anywhere?
Oh, but not the Icelandics on the Pentlands- she is rather tall!!
Thanks!

Harelaw Equestrian Centre at Longniddry, they hire out hunters but also do beach rides, there was 4 of us went from our yard and got to do proper galloping on the beach.
Would highly recommend and was reasonably priced.

They stopped doing the rides and put their ponies out on loan schemes, so ponies are still there but not for public trekking now. There is another place at West Linton, West Tarf - they are RDA but not sure about treks with them.

Its nice to hear that the ponies went on loan, rather than just closing down. I hadn't ralised the place at West Linton was RDA, has just presumed it was another hacking centre. Thanks for all the info :-)

Does she drive? If so there is a small yard near North Berwick which does great hacking called Seacliff stables. They are in the yelly pages. Went there a couple months ago on recommendation from a riding pal of mine and they were excellent, can thoroughly recommend them! The riding is over farmland and local woodlands with very little roadwork plus if the tide is right you can go for a gallop on the beach. Don't think they are a riding school as such but they are very friendly and you don't ride in a line nose to tail!

Ditto tinuviel. Someone got me a voucher for a beach ride at Seacliff for Christmas, since not easy to hack very far from my yard. It was fantastic - you get proper "instruction" in hacking, if you see what I mean.

It is a shame about the icelandics, that was fab too. Although if your mum ever gets the opportunity to try one elsewhere, she shouldn't turn it down, I'm 5ft 11 and they carried me at high speed no problem!

Thanks for your positive comments about Seacliff too, its good to have a couple of places recommended :-)
Trying the icelandics is something that I've thought about each time I visit home, driving up the A702, it is a real shame the opportunity is now gone. We saw a display once, at the Royal Highland showground I think, and the arena was small and the icelandics really fast, and the look of terror on one of the riders faces is something we reminisce about fondly whenever we were thinking of having a go ;-))
Hopefully one day we'll get to experience it ourselves!!!

No probs at all. PM me if you want the website or anything - I remember when I got the voucher it was nightmare trying to find out anything about the place as it doesn't seem very well known.

I miss the icelandics actually, my friend and I used to make it our treat as our one speedy hack of the year - my loan boy's top speed is collected canter, even in open fields!

It isn't an RDA yard as such - it's a livery and breeding (in a minor way) yard for Icelandics that does a couple of RDA sessions a week during term-time.
