I want to get my OH a 'proper' lesson for Christmas with a 'proper' instructor-ie. not me teaching him on my horse as probably neither of us are helpful for a beginner. Can anyone recommend somewhere good for teaching adults? He's 25.

I know of somewhere near Bucks that a friend of mine really rates. I don't know if it will be too far though.

Just on the Berks/Bucks border is the Spanish Bit Riding School, I haven't been there for a few years but it is still run by the same lady who was great, Jill Harris I think was her name, really nice horses, indoor and outdoor school and a personal touch to it all, near Dorney Common, not far from Windsor/Slough. Is also BHS approved etc. Wellington Riding in Heckfield is vast and ok but did feel llike I was on a production line - outstanding facilities though.....dpens what you're after but if you look on the web you should be able to find some info on both. Lived in Hants, travelled thru Berks and worked in Bucks (!!) and Spanish Bit was on way home and tried a few and this was the one I would recommend. Good luck!

In London, I definitely recommend Wimbledon Village stables -very nice people and a good offering, bearing in mind you are in the capital city! In Berks - Berkshire Riding Centre is quite good - great indoor arena and good tuition, especially for beginners. I've also recently tried out Rycroft and standard of tuition is very good but it is quite expensive.

Bit off the subject....PN, where is Wormwood Scrubs Pony Centre? One of my main customer sites is Hammersmith Hospital so I'm up that way a lot and have never seen anything even hinting at horses being nearby?! Is it the other side of the park? I do see the Army training/exercising on horseback in the park some days.

There's a riding school named 'wormwood scrubs?'

Ha, quality.

Checkendon is nice - expensive, but lesson sizes are small and they're quite friendly.

Hall place - great facillities and horses, but very expensive and I didn't find them particularily friendly

Bearwood - basic facilities, but very friendly. Quite a casual set-up which may suit some better than others.
