Riding school lessons?? £££££££££

My seven year old daughter, who has ridden before, and been to mini pc camp is going to the local RS for 1 half hour lesson next week. She hasn't ridden for over a year due to losing some confidence with a not-so suitable loan pony. I agreed to this, as one of her friends who has quite sevre learning issues, politely requested that could H join her. I couldn't say no could I?? Having a joint semi private half hour (lead rein) lesson will benefit the other girl, as she can copy mine.
Now, have I got out of date? (I used to teach at this RS 8 years ago) or is the price of such a lesson at this RS more pricey than most? I could have sworn it wasn't this much! I have to pay £27.50 for 1 half hour! My purse will feel the stretch!!

sounds about right. Most riding school are struggling with insurance premiums and so lessons have jumped up in price. a decent school would be about £40 per hr

That's more than the cost for an hour of private lesson with the junior instructors where I work.
Is that for both girls? It might be about right if you were quoted for both because you would need essentially 2 adults for that time.

Personally, I think its a lot, but I am a tad out of date!!

My local is £13 per hour

I also take her to a higher prestige school, which is £10/ half hour

Ouch. It definitely sounds like too much to me. But then maybe we don't charge as much as we could be getting.... Think that would be bad for buisness.

£40 each, that really does make it an elite hobby, not good for the sport

Unfortunately riding lessons are so expensive these days considering how expensive insurance is prices reflect that. However I work at an RS (BHS approved) and charge less than half of that, so I would say what you are paying is over the odds. But it may also depend what part of the country you are in. What is the level of qualification the instructor holds?

High level of instructor or not, this is a LEAD REIN lesson, so no piaffes or 1.40m jumps here! I'd be surprised if they have anyone over the experience of stage 2 to take the girls, its not exactly taxing teaching a few 'steering manoeuvres' or their 'up-downs'!
Glad I am not doing this often, that's all!

Sounds like a good plan. My pony won't be ready for another 3 years, so patience is really required.
I am doing this as a favour to the little girl and her mum. Poor wee sweet thing is attached at the hip to my daughter at the mo, and according to the teachers at school, is really improving because of it. Makes me a very proud mum too!

Outrageous, even if RS insurance has gone up , it works out at about £100 per hour!!!!!!
I can get a world class instructor and horse for that, never mind some otherwise unemployable person.
I think you will find they have very few customers.
The highest paid girls here get about £7.00 per hour and the lowest do it for it for free riding which is probably illegal!

yes it sounds expensive ... but break it down .. £55 for 2 ponies, 2 leaders,1 instructor, insurance, rates, menage, plus someone to get said ponies ready and do them off afterwards ..... expensive but sadly realistic if the riding school is going to make ends meet....

I pay £20 for a half hour private for my daughter - £18 for myself as Im using my own horse - this is the cheapest in our area though as some of the schools charge £30 a half hour and the more elite ones, £75 per lesson and £45 per lesson - guess who wont be getting any of my business anytime this side forever

Blooming heck, now I've been out of the loop lessons-wise for a few years but think I used to pay around £14 for an hours group lesson with the YO (around same for a half hr private) and think it was around same for clients with one of the normal instructors, I think what you're being charged is expensive for what you're getting.

I manage a riding school and if you want quality Lessons with quality instruction then you have to pay. The price you are paying is around what we charge. I don't think people take the over heads into consideration. Its not just a pony and instructor, its the feed and hay in their bellies, the shoes on their feet, Dentist And vets bill s, bedding, staff wages, insurance, electric, water, rates, maintaining the facilities, staff training costs, exam fees,bhs reg fees, licensing frees vat, etc
Our horses are kept to the highest standard and we offer good instruction And use quality tack. Of course tb

I pay £22 for half hour private and if my friend comes it is £19 each for semi private.
Lessons have jad to go on hold now though with added cost of hay and Straw coming up until spring.
