My niece who is soon to be 8 has asked for riding lessons for her birthday. I have been asked to recommend somewhere and organise it for her. Well, if this was in my home county of Warwickshire I'd be fine - but down here I am clueless. Can anyone recommend anywhere? They actually live in Chalfont St Giles.

Thanks muchly!!

Yes - their website certainly looks good. I'd love to talk to someone who has actually been there though. I have memories of learning to ride many, many years ago(!) at a very dodgy riding school so really wanted to get it right first time for Maddie!

I called Shardeloes and they charge £32 per hour for a shared lesson - is this about the going rate now? I may be tempted to buy a small pony instead!!

Coh blimey! Down south (well watford

!) they charge me £35 for a lesson on my own horse at my yard

so wouldnt be suprised if that is the going rate nowadays. Im at uni (notts but campus in leicstershire) and round here its between £22 and £25 per hour for a shared lesson. Round you only "rich" people must ride hehe

! Joking, i kept my horse in chesham for a bit though and couldnt belive it, everything is 5X more expensive!
Saying that i know three people that ride there (2 used to share a horse on my yard till it was sold and one is just a friend) and they all say its the best around for advanced riders. Not sure about beginners though

I've heard it's good too, and I used to work at a farm which adjoined their land. I'm sure if there had been anything dodgy, I would have heard about it

£32 an hour for a kids lesson sounds a bit on the pricey side, but not extortionate. I'm in Berks, pay about £50 for an hours private lesson (adults).

OK - thanks for that.

I guess I'd better bite the bullet and see how it goes - then if they seem really keen look at other options (If I can say to hubby that to have a little pony for them to learn on with my help, would actually be cheaper than 3x 1hour lessons per week, then I might actually get my way!!)

Although I've never had lessons there, I have been to Shardeloes, it's nice and does have a good reputation.

However, also worth bearing in mind (a little bit further afield, but not that far - and may possibly not be as expensive) is MECA riding at Wooburn Green, which takes riders of all ages but AFAIK mainly specialises in children.

Again, I have no personal experience of having ridden there, but have heard nothing bad about it. www.mecariding.co.uk

Brawlings Farm, in Chalfont St Peter has a good reputation & is considerably cheaper than Shardeloes. I believe they have a website, so hopefully you can find the details on there.

Snowball Farm is near Burnham - not that far from MECA.

My husband had lessons at MECA and I was pleased with them. I have had lessons on my own horse at both MECA and Snowball and was happy with them.

When I lived in the area there were a couple of riding schools down Rawlings Lane in Seer Green. One specialised in small children but I can't remember their names.

My daughter's friend moved to Bucks, and rides at MECA. They really rate this RS, having tried several en route to MECA and had a quite a few poor experiences along the way (including one RS with loose dogs that bite! - sorry can't recall which as it was 2 years ago)
