When the British Army mobilised in 1914 they were able to call on the Hunting fraternity to supply the cavalry and officers with remounts. Despite the orthodox view of the cavalry in WW1 the contribution made in the first months and last months of the war this was vital, underlined to some extent by the fact the first and last shots of the British Army in WW1 were fired from the back of a horse. For the last couple of months I have been considering marking the contribution of our hunters by riding some or all of the retreat from Mons from 23rd August to 5th September next year. I haven't worked out the logistics yet but would be interested in finding out if anyone wanted to join me.
