As title suggest really? Do I keep my lad on it, take him off it completely? Or is there a cheaper option to the Global Herbs Rig Calm?

Background… We have just moved to a new yard (4 weeks ago) and my lad (who was gelded late at nearly 4) started jumping the fences. The first time he jumped the fence, he chased a mare around for a good hour or so :( The next day he jumped again and got in with another mare, but just grazed with her... :o

They moved the mares and put geldings next to him, and he jumped again to be with the geldings?? But he just grazed happily with them!!

We decided to add another gelding to his field so he had another playmate (there was only 1 other gelding in with him at that point) to see if this helped and he jumped to be in with the geldings again!

So, I bought a tub of Rig Calm at £28, but as he has to have two scoops per feed, it’s only lasted just over 2 weeks. I can’t really stomach paying £50 a month!!

He hasn’t jumped the fences since he’s been on it, but his personality hasn’t changed either. Not that he was a mad gelding in the first place really!! He now happily grazes with the 2 geldings in his field and hasn't jumped...

So the question is... do I keep him on the Rig Calm (and find a cheaper version) or do you think he’s just settled down now and the Rig Calm hasn’t really got anything to do with it?!

Thanks for reading this far, any suggestions welcome!!! :D

If you still want to try something, try any type of Agnus Castus, Feedmark sell it. That is the active ingredient for mares and stallions that calms their hormones, it was traditionally used by monks to help them remain celibate apparently!

I used it when my stud started working around mares, then slowly weaned him off it. It definitely helped him to concentrate on the job! :)

Welcome to my world :D (apart from the jumping fences bit) he tends to like to try and just go through them.

I think bobbing him on another calmer (Relax Me) and just using 2 scoops a day will keep his riggy tendencies at bay enough to stop him field hopping, I’ve found that I can reduce the amount during winter, still a bar steward with horses but it keeps his tinky winky and sexual urges at bay when he’s with me…thankfully!. If he’s been cut late and the fact that he’s only 4 (being a bit of a Kevin) so it could be a combination of both that hopefully will wear off soon.

I agree it's not cheap but it does work.
