Friend has been offered a yearling at reduced rate as he has only dropped one testical. He is 11 months old and doesn't act very 'colty' How much of a chance is there that the other one will drop? and if not does anyone know how much it is likely to cost to be operated on?
Anyone know??

Has a vet looked at him yet. I have a pony yearling colt who is 14 months old. His testicles hadn't appeared to drop. My vet came and had a jolly good grope, he could feel both but they were to high to be removed yet. One testicle is now there one day and gone the next and he has turned into a real idiot when anywhere near the mares. I am just having to wait. This has happened in the past and not been a proble. I have always managed to get them gelded normally before they turn two.

my 2 breton colts were well over 2y old before nature finished her job, even so 1 of the boys was a bit of a slow grower & the vet had to hope the bits would drop under sedation, which they did,
as far as i know problems occure when....

1) the testicle does not form properly and can't decend but still gives off a bit too much hormone.
2) the vet/person (some traveller types still do their own work) doing the gelding does not do a prize winning job.
3) a late gelding after their temperament and habit have formulated.

i would doubt 2 & 3 would be even remotely relevent here.

the possibility of the colt needing to be gelded under general anesthetic if he does have a problem would be the only real worry i would have, but this is rare, speak to a vet and get the latest advise, it is always a risk buying an ungelded colt, but then it is always a risk buying anything,
good luck bye
