I have a 17h Belgian bred gelding who has I have owned for 8 months, we have suspected he was a rig for awhile due to his behaviour but coming up to spring he has been a total utter stallion, so we had him blood tested and he is a rig. I was just wondering if anyone else has one and what different things they have to do. I am just about to move yards and Im going to the new yard tomorrow to discuss options as I dont think the YO realises that I cannot turn him out with mares or anything as he is just too dangerous!

I gave my horse a course of injections called Depo Provera which are off the vet. You might like to discuss this possibility with the vet. However I had to sign a disclaimer as it was unlicensed for use in horses. This was about 10 years ago now and there may be better things on the market. If he's been blood tested as a rig he is a true rig which means he still has testicular tissue, wheras a false rig is one who is blood tested negative but still shows stallion tendencies - due to being gelded later in life for example.

I have to say though that I lost my horse after his final injection (his third) with a heart attack. It was some weeks after the last injection so did not appear that his death was related but I will never know if that unlicensed drug has anything to do with it although years later when talking about this to my vet, he said that horses gelded later in life can suffer with fatal heart attacks, its certainly not unheard of. He also said a lot of stallions used for breeding when coming off the mare after mating will collapse with colic like symptoms which are related to a sudden heart rhythm disruption. Guess I will never know for sure.
