I have bought a "proper" Irish Cob. mainly white with a few black patches, commonly known as a checketty (checkidy - various spellings) coloured horse here in Ireland. I have had him a month and i have never known a horse with so much coat. A furminator goes through but it is so thick he never looks "groomed". I do not want to clip this boy as he has had a lot of issues, trust being one of them. How do i groom him properly with such a thick coat, what tools do you use on your hairies? I dont want to rug him this year for the above reasons. He has severe "bog burn" on his feathers as he was turned out on very wet land, this is being addressed.

Suggestions???

Being the owner of a smiler hairy I would just forget him looking smart until spring and accept you have a bog pony! Too much grooming will only strip out the oils in his coat that waterproof it anyway :-) x

I use a plastic curry to groom out around the saddle and girth area the brush the face so there's nothing under the bridle then proceed to ride out with a paper bag over mine and ponies heads to hide our blushes :-) x

Agreed - resigned myself to the fact pone won't have any white patches 'til spring. I just give him a once over with a plastic curry when he's dry, and don't worry about it. Mane and tail is great stuff, and I stick some pig oil on his feather now and then - that seems to help keep them whiter.

Thank you all. Looks like i'm resigned to a mucky pone for the duration then. This boy was this hairy in September/October when I bought him so either he is particularly hairy (he;s only 6) or it is going to be a bad winter and he's determined to be warm.

He is in at night and if it is particularly nasty during the day and he doesnt seem to roll in the mud, that would be far too much of an effort thank you very much lol.

Cant get a plastic curry comb through him by the way.

Any further suggestions??

Childrens detangler spray should help you get a curry through his coat, wherever said cobs are low maintenance was wrong!
Some cobs are just so hairy they have to be clipped out all year round, joy of the breed I'm afraid!
X

I used to have a lovely coloured mare, and now have a bog pony Fell mare, so Im used to looking like stig of the dump! I had the bonus that Daizy loved being clipped, and Melly doesnt mind much either!
I find that Mark Todd show sheen and Absorbine are both fab for thick manes and tails, I also spray Mellys feathers with absorbine in the summer and use pig oil in the winter.
You could try hot clothing him with a touch of surgical spirit in the water, just make sure your cloth is really really wrung out and you rub pretty briskly! Alternatively, the brown bag option works well too!! xx

Thank you, Butter wouldnt melt lol.

Dya know i didnt think of hotragging him. Had be been any other colour than white it would have occurred DOH lol. Only thing that may cause probs is the length of his hair.

Have pig oil, if ever his legs dry out, i will use it lol.

HE DOESNT GET MUDDYYYYYY lol. Rolling is far beneath him, it would involve expending energy.

Either that or i am going to buy a sandblaster - JOKE lol.
