Ok so everyone heard 'a good horse is never the wrong colour' right. . .
i've been looking for a horse for a few months now something not boring and nice and forward to do showjumping and enjoy really
was picturing a big 16.3hh bay horse gelding in my head typical type i normally go for preferably wb with a lot of blood in though as do
like the TB brain and speed etc.

so anyway long story short and loads of horses later, I go to see a couple of horses at reputable dealers. Two horses one exactly what
Im looking for but very quite lovely quiet plod for someone wanting to hunt or hack etc but bit too quiet for me. Second horse black
two white patches gorgous head and lovely attitude, jumped him, hacked him and took him around their xc course, lovely and forwards
just enough spark without being a loony and gave me that feeling of 'we can do anything!!' felt fantastic but colour just not what i had
pictured in my head.

I know i'll probably get shot down in flames here but i decided i would be stupid if a horse that was perfect in every other way and gave
me that much i didn't take just becuase of him not being what i had pictured in build and stamp and age etc. he was everything I wanted
so I bought him and he's at home with me now, and . . . . . . he's been great!!!! I love him !

but has anyone every bought something they weren't looking for as such and its still worked out - I guess I get caught up on the fact i
don'y see many coloured horses showjumping much near me and because I want a jumper its stuck in my head he won't jump ( I know thats
really stupid thing to think) - even though he flew 1.10 with me when i tried him. Am I being completely and utterly stupid here. I just look
at him and love him and i know of all the horses i tried who had so many issues he's perfect I just need to get out of my head what I
pictured didn't have anything to do with personality etc its purely looks - pointless post but just wondered if people have had similar
experiences and been pleasantly surprised!! and proved wrong !!!

I bought a 3 year old filly PBA with loads of TB in her a few years ago. I didnt want a mare and I def didnt want an arab or TB or an unbroken youngster :D I wanted something safe, sane and that had been around the block a few times
Turned out to be my horse in a million and am devastated she was taken from me so young, will never find another like her.
She has completely changed the way I look at horses now, i love PBAs and have 4 mares and don't do geldings / stallions / colts really (except for a sec c colt I fancied) lol :)

At the end of the day you have to love the horse, see its head over the stable door and know that every minute you spend with it isnt wasted

Yes it does sound crazy to discount it on its colour but dont beat yourself up if you choose to

Ive always had cob, welsh part bred types and all geldings. When looking for a new horse i knew what i wanted and it sure wasn't going to be an ex racer, young, TB, mare. Having seen and handled two on the yard i couldn't be doing with the hassle.....

In May this year i took delivery (otherhalf was to blame!) of a 7yr old ex racing TB mare. Needless to say after a few hiccups to start with she is the best horse i've ever owned and i take back everything i ever thought about them x

All of mine have been pretty much what I set out for, in fact with the youngster, we told a dealer friend we liked duns, and that was all he had to go on! :p

The only think that would put me off certain colours, greys/pallys/coloureds with lots of white etc, is the cleaning thing! I love that I can drag mine out the field, hose down his little socks, and we're ready to go out competing!

We had retired our loud leopard spotted Appaloosa mare and were looking for another. Sis found one to go and look at, registered pure-bred, we knew the parents and that they were lovely-looking horses.
We got there and saw a very ordinary chestnut mare - not a spot in sight. We only tried her to be polite but she was a super, responsive ride and we decided that we would take the plunge. Last year she took first and 2nd at her breed show and over the years she has coloured out with varnish marks and marbling.
Funnily enough the part-bred AppyxWelsh 3 yr old that we bought this year is very spotted, although she was born solid and her foal pics are very similar to the chestnut's.

I wanted a grey, Arabian gelding. Since then I've had my head put on straight and just made an offer on a coloured part Welsh mare. If you'd asked me whether I'd ever even countenance a coloured, I'd have laughed. My reasoning is rubbish though. I don't like when you brush them and black/brown hairs end up on the white patches and vice versa. How do you stop this from happening dammit?? Anyway, thats not a good enough reason not to buy.

I wanted a solid colour hunter type. I bought a bay tobiano Gypsy Cob. NEVER wanted a cob or a coloured. But he's a horse in a million and I can't imagine being without him :)

I hated coloureds, said I'd never ever have one of the ugly creatures! Now I have one and of course in my opinion he is the most gorgeous thing to grace the earth :D Totally in love with the colour now. I will however, never buy anything with 3 socks.. OCDness would drive me insane !

Hi, I was looking for a horse last year, I always said I wouldn't have a grey, as all my other horses have been bays. I went to see a connie x, not sure what to expect, as I was in the market for an all rounder, but mainly dressage. As soon as I seen this grey mare, her paces where unbelievable for a connie x, but colour still put me off. As soon as I left, I called to put a deposit on her and I haven't look back, the grey has gone dappled, but in a year this baby girl is competing affiliated dressage, and the last time we when out we won the two classes. If you fine the right horse, the colour doesn't matter.

I would never buy a cremello. I think they are the ugliest creatures around (I have some who live on my farm). Every other colour (and I do have almost ever colour imaginable!) is fine by me.

Everyone has a favourite and least favourite colour so don't feel bad about it.

I like nice solid dark colours, black, brown, chestnut, bay.

I'm not keen on grey, coloureds (ok if minimal white on them), cremellos although I have had a couple of greys (don't like how they fade plus they just don't shine) and a skewbald. Don't like blue eyes either and I've had one of those in the past too.

Other colours I'm not fussed either way.

If I had the choice of two horses I liked and the only difference was colour I would choose the dark one over the grey. At the moment I own a black, a chestnut and a bay. I was offered a grey when I was horse hunting last but as there was so much other choice at the time I passed it over for the black one.

My mum always said if she was looking at a horse from her window it had to be pretty. You have to look at it every day, if you don't like it don't buy it!

The horse you looked at sounds fab. You're nuts!
If the horse was absolutely pig ugly then I could understand somewhat. However the next horse I buy I swear I'm going to try it out when i'm blind folded so I don't just fall for a pretty face again

11 years ago I went shopping for a grey tb type mare of about 16hh and this little blue and white cob turned and looked atme and it was love at first sight! I still didn't think I would waste my time trying him out as he was only about 15h and I thought he would be too small and being a cob thought he wouldn't be able to jump but my friends made me try him and he just instantly had me grinning like a Cheshire cat! He soon shot up to just over 16h and he loves his jumping (when he feels like it) and is just my big superstar and has made all my horsey dreams come true! I now have another blue and white who was another love at first sight purchase!

I would never buy a cremello or a spotted horse; they really don't do it for me. AT ALL!

I have a dun, a black and a grey at the moment. I miss having a bay; I do love a smart bay with a star.

We went looking for a 14hh games pony for my daughter, when we turned up he was nearer 15hh and has "jumping eyes ". he has white round the outside which does make him look a bit different. We dont notice it ourselves anymore and he is fantastic. my son has taken him on and is having great fun with him. We did find my daughter a lovely chestnut games pony in the end.
i dont like cremello so wouldnt even go and see one but love the coloureds

I agree! My loan horse was a coloured and this used to drive me mad, lol....decided when I was buying that I didn't really want a coloured, or anything with light hairs.....but didn't rule out anything as if everything else was right, then colour is last.

I wanted a bay. Did not ever consider chestnut. Wanted something around 15.3 to 16.3. Did not ever consider going bigger as need my daughter to ride......ended up with 17.1 chestnut. Oops lol

Both my horses sort of fell into my lap when I wasn't looking! My gelding is fab and looks like a painting of a horse, you know the old fashioned paintings of horses in days gone by haha! He's classical. My second horse .... So not what I was looking for! A bay mare. Would never have chosen that. Not for any real reason, just not what I had in mind. But she's fabulous. She's been everything a horse should be, a proper friend. She's very different from my gelding and real sweetheart and very easy. In lots of ways she's more suitable than my gelding even though he's exactly what I thought I wanted. I love them both to death but sometimes horses take you by surprise and you just go with it. If it feels right, it's right!

:D Someone once told me that he thinks cremellos 'look as if they were taken out of the oven too soon, like half cooked pastry' :)
