Good morning everyone!

Quick question for you. We have a public right of way that runs through our front garden. The path isn’t massively used – maybe 3 or 4 people during the course of a day – but our neighbours on both sides have had chickens/dogs killed or injured by people coming through with loose dogs.

I think long term the only option is to fence part of the garden but in the meantime I’m planning to put a sign on the gate to ask people to put their dogs on a lead. It’s only the occasional passer-by that doesn’t do this so I don’t want to look like I’m being rude. I also think that if people are happy to let their dogs run all over someone’s else’s garden leaving the occasional turd behind then a sign probably won’t make too much of a difference! Nonetheless, I would be interested in any suggestions for the right wording and any other ideas you might have.

Thank you!

Rude.....Rude....I would bl**dy would be.....what gives them the right to allow dogs off the lead, upset other animals that have the right to be on the land and left in peace(Yeah I know they have right of way).....and then allow their animals to foul without using a poo bag to pick it up.....please there should be a little respect....so I would say and start with : POLITE NOTICE- PLEASE KEEP DOGS ON LEAD - REMOVE MESS LEFT BY YOUR DOGS- THANK YOU......Good Luck :)

I'd go for something like Thank you for keeping your dogs under control (or on lead) through our garden. (Or the chickens/livestock thanks you for keeping your dogs under control in our garden)

diddy, RoWs have been a contentious and growing issue for many years. Nowadays there are many who take the view that 'Because I have the Right of access, so I'll use it' and there's little that can be done about that, nor should it!

Depending upon the layout of the land and the RoW itself, it is possible to apply for the pathway to be re-routed, but that's costly and unlikely to succeed. Better, as 'be positive' says, to erect signs as best you can, reminding people that a RoW is restricted to a path and it isn't an implied entrance for others to do as or go where they please. Regarding the signs; (PLEASE - optional!) KEEP TO THE FOOTPATH AND KEEP DOGS ON LEADS AT ALL TIMES, would be the route that I'd take, I think!

I don't think that there is any sign that is guaranteed to make every dog owner behave, but personally, I would probably begin with putting up signs warning for free range chickens.

There is also many different signs which asks people to pick up their dog's poop or to not to let their dog poop on your lawn.

You can get many different ones, I have one saying "dogs to be kept on leads LIVESTOCK" there are plenty to choose from on the link, keep it simple and clear so they are in no doubt as to the meaning.

I understand why people use signs asking/telling people to keep their dogs on a lead, but I think that it is more important that a dog is under control. A dog that isn't under control, and especially if they're on a longer lead, could maybe still be able to walk off the path and on to the lawn, to poop, kill chickens etc. E.g. my bitches leather leads are about/more than 2 meters long, and I think that Flexi leads can be 3, 5 or 8 meters long.

I think I would fence off the path, with fencing that dogs can't get through, it will upset some of the walkers, but if they stick to the path they really shouldn't complain. When we were at livery the YO fenced off a footpath through one of the fields, he fenced much wider than he was legally required to, but he still got a great deal of grief from some locals! Fencing is the only way to keep dogs away from stock imo

Hi all,

Thanks for all your ideas. FL - I particularly enjoyed the second-to-last suggestion - the kids want to go with that :)

So I'm thinking something short & to the point for now, then fencing the garden in later. I'd love to fence the path itself off but that won't work as it goes down the driveway. However, with this horrible weather no one has been through today so problem solved for next couple of days at least!
