A girl (14 years old) at our yard's pony has recently come back from the vets. Hes a NF pony and she had been growing his mane, it was getting really long and thick (how she wanted it). Went to visit him just before he came back and the YO/YM (who isnt very nice) had pulled his mane and thinned it to about 4'' long, it wouldnt have looke dout of place on a TB!
So the girl is understandably devestated and crying so her mum goes to complain about what has been done and the only response she got was 'thats how they're supposed to look' from the YO/YM

would you be angry if someone had done something like that to your horse while it was at the vets and what you you do? Doesnt seem to be anywhere to take it further?

I'd be LIVID!!! OMG - how dare they!?!

What on earth made them think they could do that? Is she DIY or full livery? That's awful...

is this a registered pony used for showing? Unless it had been done for medical grounds I would be seeking damages and loss from the vets... a native pony must not have a pulled mane in the ring.

I assume to YO/YM is rather stupid? if she doesnt know something as basic as this she should NOT be in charge of horses.

How terrible..she would not be cutting anything much else at all by the time I had finished with her! Cheeky cow!

That is terrible. I would be upset if anyone trimmed my horse at all. Even my best mate who shares him knows better than to trim him in any way.

Its like sending your child to school and her coming home with her hair all cropped off IMO.

I'd be really P'd off! I knew of this happening to a girl's coloured cob and luckily the girl handled it very well.

Sadly I don't think there is anything else to do. They've told YO they aren't happy but the only thing to do is wait for the mane to grow again. If that was YO's response though I'd be worried about it happening again. I'm no expert on new forests, but surely if its a native its "supposed to" have a natural mane, with the occasional bit of tidying. The point is, long or short, its supposed to be the owners decision! Hope she didn't want to show this year...

That's appalling! I can't blieve they did that! It's not like you can stick it back on though

she'll just have to wait for it to grow. Idiotic YM!

Id be absolutely furious. I have a fell with a VERY long mane and I'd be devastated if someone did that! I would definately try to seek damages from the vets, as _charlie_ said NF ponies are only meant to have very lightly pulled manes, if at all.

I Agree with Charlie - I would claim for damages as you can't show this year now. I have a Sec D who i show, and if anyone went near him with a pulling comb, they would be scalped.
What right did this woman have to take his mane off? I have never heard of a vet's taking it upon themselves to pull a ponie's mane! Did they have nothing more important to do?

I would withold money from vets bill explaining exactly how angry I was both at the mane pulling without permission, stressing that it is against the breed regulations and at the attitude of the YM

yep its the YM at the vets practice and there was no medical reason for it to be done. I couldnt believe it when they told me,i'd have cut her hair off if she'd had done it to my horse.

Luckily she only does little local shows (well did last year so am assuming she will this year) so hopefully wont affect him to much.

still in shock really!! cant believe she had nothing better to do with her time - like look after poorly horses!!!

[/ QUOTE ] Actually I have! Many years ago, one of my horses was at a vet clinic for quite a long stay, and when I went down to visit she looked really smart as one of the staff had taken it upon themselves to pull her mane. Didn't bother me at all, because she was a TB type, but I suppose they really should have checked with me first.

However, I can understand how someone with a native pony would be livid in the circumstances!

Assume that YM doesn't understand what she's done wrong & thought she was being helpful? In which case, all the more reason to complain to the vets themselves - not the YM, because she needs to be told why she was wrong & instructed not to do it again unless she asks first.

Sorry...lost plot here

why does a horse that goes to the vets have to have it's mane pulled.......when my TB mare whom spent 50% of her life hospitalized at my vets for periods of weeks......got groomed, but they did not start attacking my mane or tail and restyling it for me.....I would take it up with the vet treating my horse while it stayed there,as to why this 'What ever she was'

felt the compulsion to attack the pony's mane!

I'd be on the phone to the practice manager - they don't need to know what level showing the girl is doing, just that breed regulations stipulate that a native should be in natural presentation - no pulled mane. I would withhold payment of the bill until I got resolution. If anyone pulled Pepps mane I'd be livid (mind you she'd probably kill them for trying before I got to them!). The YM needs some education, in breed regulations, manners and the fact that this girl is her 'customer' and so effectively pays her wages

I would be totaly livid they had no right to touch the mane unless for medical reasons, if no medical reason involved then i would be on the phone to the pratice manager looking for a and apology and b compensation and c would be pointing out i wouldnt trust them ever again

I'd be furious! I'd register a proper complaint about the fact that she'd done it without asking & the attitude when I'd complained to her. I'd also be withholding an amount off the bill unless I got a bloody good apology from a semior partner & the YM.

There was that story recently about the stallion, Romeo, who was in police custody as it was believed he was stolen. The police grooms pulled his mane (it was really long - palomino as well, so he looked gorgeous before). When the owner eventually got the horse back (they couldn't make a case against him) he took them to court and won about £80k damages I think. I believe this was for loss of stud fees, not for the mane pulling, but even so - might be worth digging the story out and waving it in their faces

What a bloody cheek! a few years ago my mum's friends kids were riding Buddie my little NATIVE Sec A, and they decided to take it upon themselves to CUT his long flowing mane!!!! I went effing mental and I cried!! It was about 6 inches long when the silly cow finished with it!! Then I saw her a couple of weeks later and she said ''I thought I might cut Buddies mane again at the weekend'' I asked her politely not to touch it ever again... Her kids never rode him again after that for some reason !!!!!

I would be completely outraged. They do not need to know show or breed regs, they simply should NOT have done it. Full stop. They had no NEED and no RIGHT, and should pay compensation (although I wouldn't worry about that personally, money won't grow the mane back)

what was the pony staying at the vets for? surely the last thing he fancied having done to him was having his mane pulled! I'd be furious - i hope that they waiver the livery fees at the very least.

Question for all those seeking 'damages'....how on earth would you quantify it??? It will grow back. You wouldnt have a hope of winning that one in Court. Sorry but whilst its upsetting and I appreciate why you would be fed up, suing the vet is not the answer and will only lead to more headache.
