Hi all
I'm totally depressed now as my farrier has said he suspects my horse has ringbone. I've no idea of this condition and how it affects horses? He isn't lame. Should i just leave well alone if he's not lame and carry on or should i have X rays done?

ringbone/ sidebone if established and settled might never cause a problem! if horse is sound then i would leave alone, just make sure shod with enough heel support, balanced, and short breakover point! if you start to investigate you will end up with an exclusion on your insurance!!! you could discuss with your vet the pros and cons of doing x rays scans mri s etc, (read expensive) and look at your insurance renewal date! if you decide to investigate but i am of thought that if not broken dont try to fix!!

My horse has non articular low ringbone.

She's not lame, trots out on the road in short bursts and I do everything with her I want to do.

I am aware that in the future it may cause issues if it does start to impede the joints within the hoof structure, but for the time being I'm not letting it affect what I do with P.

It was seen on the xray 3 years ago and the vet wasn't overly concerned at all.

My horse was diagnosed with ringbone about 6 weeks ago and i thought it would mean certain retirement for him as he was hopping lame in the trot. However after a month on bute and gentle hacking he is now sound and starting to work in the school again. Don't think of it as being the worst if your horse is sound and happy, it is just something to be aware of and to keep an eye on. I now warm up a lot longer to loosen him up and avoid a lot of trotting on the roads.
Hope it all goes ok for you x
