Hi
One of our ponies, 23 yr old NF pony that my daughter rides (little bit of pony club, mainly hacking) has just been diagnosed with low articular ringbone . Vet thinks its early stages but that she is stiff when first ridden and stride is shortened as a result - though this improves as she is ridden. The pony has been reluctant to canter recently and also to jump - hence getting the vet to look at her. The vet is happy that she should be hacked, though no jumping and being careful where we canter her. Explained all this to my daughter who is happy not to jump her as she loves this pony and is content to hack her and do occasional flatwork rallies. So, we have bute for days when she isn't so good and the vet recommended we put her onto Synequin or Cosequin as a supplement. Just wondered really what experience others have had of ringbone and using the supplements. Was a bit shocked at the cost, but then worked out that although expensive, on balance we are looking at £1 a day. I am not sure how long we will be able to hack her- she is not lame just her stride is a bit choppy when she starts out. She is a loan pony, so could go back to owners for retirement but I wonder if standing around in a field all day with no exercise is worse that gentle hacking?
